'14 TN DB Emmanuel Smith

“I just want to take visits just to visit. I just want to see other schools and stuff like that. ... I’m just waiting to see what happens.”

But he said a few teams — including Tennessee, one of the five schools that have extended scholarship offers to him — have reached out to him over the past several weeks to let him know they intend to continue recruiting him. “They (talked with me) after I committed,” Smith said of the Vols, who hosted him for their first spring scrimmage March 16. “They told me they’re going to keep on coming after me, and I told them thanks for coming to my practice (last month). That’s pretty much the last time that we talked.”

Smith said Tennessee defensive backs coach Willie Martinez attended one of his practices less than two weeks ago. He said coaches from Vanderbilt, Florida State, Ole Miss, Ohio State and nearby Middle Tennessee also have stopped at Oakland since April 15.

Still, he said he remains satisfied with his decision to commit to Vanderbilt, which hosted him on unofficial visits for “six or seven” of its spring practices. “(Vanderbilt is) just close to home,” said Smith, who has been electronically timed at 4.7 seconds in the 40-yard dash. “I love the coaches, the program, school-wise, and all of my family can come see me play (there). ... I’ve been over there quite a few times, just talking to coaches and watching film and just getting to know them better.

“They see me playing safety, first off, for sure. They see me coming in and having a good chance of early playing time, and (they say) just come in ready to work.” He said he enjoyed his latest visit to Vanderbilt for the spring-ending Black and Gold Game on April 13.

“It was very fun. Good thing to watch,” Smith said. “You can see how the coaches coach in, like, a more game-like situation, so it was a good thing. ... I think they’ll be even better this year and be more of a challenge to teams than in the past, I think.”

Smith said he’s trying to convince a few other Nashville-area prospects — including wide receiver Josh Malone, defensive back RaShaan Gaulden and defensive tackle Michael Sawyers — to join him at Vanderbilt. “I’m working on all of them, trying to get them to join the family,” Smith said.

But he’s also well aware that a few of Tennessee’s in-state commitments for the 2014 class — including Gaulden’s teammate, three-star athlete Vic Wharton — are trying to recruit the same players to play for the Vols, too. “It’s kind of funny,” Smith said. “(Gaulden) goes to school with Vic, so he’s hearing all UT, and we work out together every week. We just talk, play around, laugh. We’ll see what happens at the end.”

Hope we land this kid. He and his brother will be solid LBs in college and they've stated they will go the same place.

Also, Emmanuel Smith is committed to Vanderbilt, but that doesn't mean he's done listening to Tennessee. He talked to the Vols' head coach on facebook recently and is still listening to the Vols and what they have to offer. Wouldn't count that one completely over with just yet.

There were a large number of underclassmen that performed very well as well, including Josh Smith, Emmanuel's brother. Smith continues to have offers from Vanderbilt and Tennessee but is hearing other schools like Ohio State and more.

I know we're not supposed to talk about him, but I would love to see the look on his face if we pulled Emmanuel Smith AND his brother from under Franklins nose.

Would rather have W. Green,D.J. smith, tabor,Gaulden instead of making space for Emmanuel so we can get Josh next year.

Smh... We're talking about a few tenths of a second here. He's a great athlete, point blank period.

Safeties don't have to be particularly fast but that's not to say I wouldn't be surprised if they move him to OLB in college either.

OLB would be the the way to go. Hits well and is extremely athletic. Didn't realize the size add 15- 20 lbs and he could do be solid at next level. Take at OLB but not DB.

I've seen he and his brother in person, and they are LB's that just need to put on weight. His little brother is already 6'3" 215lbs as a 2015 prospect. He should use this as a recruiting advantage because prospects with "safety like" body types are a dime-a-dozen, but athletic OLB's are rare.

Gaining weight shouldn't be an issue in a SEC s&c program. Emmanuel is a tall 6'2"-3" about 200, if he gets to 220lbs he will play and play a lot at OLB. Maggit went from 200 to 240 in around a year in our weight training.

We have the best staff in the nation and they know exactly what they are doing. I want this kid for '14 and his brother for '15.

I don't think Smith was receptive to the idea of playing LB at first. When UT told him that would be his career path, he didn't like that and committed to VU kind of out of nowhere. Now, after some thought (and probably some advice from third parties) I think he realizes LB would be his best avenue to getting to the NFL.

If he called UT today and said he wanted to commit, I think our coaches would gladly take it.

Yes and no. Everything on Rivals points towards him being solid Vandy. In fact he has only spoken to our staff once since his commitment. However, it seemed strange that he committed so early and he has expressed interest in taking other visits so I wouldn't be to surprised if he reopened his recruitment later in the process. I think for now he is solid to Vandy.

After the pounding that Hurd put on him (I'm hearing that he was literally injured) in the Beech/Oakland scrimmage the other day, it seems he would want to play with and not against him. He got a taste of how a real SEC RB hits!

Hurd: You still thinking about going to Vandy?
Smith: Maybe....
(Hurd then runs his ass over)
Hurd: You'll learn today!!!! UT>>>>>Vandy

That's how I like to think that conversation went. Haha

I think that anyone Hurd runs into, or over, will change their commitments.

Thanks for the update 74. Was wondering how Jalen did, especially with the extra 20lbs.... Sounds like he put it to good use as Emmanuel can evidently attest. Please tell Jalen we're all still stoked as hell he's a Vol! Can't wait to see this kid...

Although committed to Vanderbilt, Emmanuel Smith is still listening to the Vols: http://tennessee.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1504290 …

He is either with us or against us....

Vic Wharton is in his ear everyday, and per the 247 article on Jack Jones, he is going to be in his ear a lot, too. Emmanuel Smith and his brother are surrounded by Orange right now.
