Size-Strength-Speed
Possesses a leaner, muscular frame with adequate height. Wiry frame will need to add bulk and strength, but he's a quick-twitched athlete. Possesses very good speed and acceleration. He plays big and is a competitor.
Ball Skills
Reaches top speed quickly with the ball. Very good hands and concentration. Adjusts to the ball well in the air. Makes the difficult grab down the sideline. He possesses natural ball skills.
Versatility
A jack-of-all trades player as a Wildcat weapon on offense as well as spending significant time on defense at corner and on the perimeter offensively as a wideout. At WR, he shows good surge off the line getting into his routes. Has a great feel for seeing play develop with ball in his hands and as a direct snap tailback out of the shotgun. Very good open field vision. Due to not playing the position full time he will need refinement as a route runner if he ends up on offense. Is primarily utilized as a press corner, which he can handle vs. this level of competition. To remain at corner at the next level he would likely need to be in a heavy Cover 2 scheme with some man sprinkled in. Is aggressive and has a blue collar feel to his game. Adequate in run support and plays with a chip on his shoulder in every facet.
Big Play Ability
Perhaps his greatest talent is as a return man. He has no fear, hits the crease and can be lightning in a bottle. He is decisive and can change filed position quickly in punt/kickoff return. At WR he's elusive after the catch with sudden cuts and change-of-direction skill. Slippery to wrap up. Shows he can separate vertically with speed or underneath with quickness out of breaks. As a defensive back, he shows fast closing speed with ball skills enabling him to create big plays.
Bottom Line
Wharton is a very versatile athlete who could get recruited on both sides of the ball and contribute early on special teams. Isn't as fluid on defense as he is on offense. Best fit might be as a safety. He has excellent short area burst and can close in a hurry. Wharton is just a darn good football player who could line up anywhere.
