'14 SC RB Caleb Kinlaw

I agree there are years when you take 3-4 RBs as needed in a given recruiting class. Not very often are those the only available RBs though come game time in the fall. 3-4 classes make up your RB stable.

Just remembering "the good old days" :)

Not arguing too much :hi:

Who is the big dude off to the right?

Big dude on the right is Mr Kinlaw. He played football at South Carolina State and CFL.

You think he's big? His little brother is Courtney Brown, who played DE at Penn State and was the #1 draft pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Lots of valid speculations.

I think it may be a numbers thing. I think Brent received good inside info, and UT may only take two backs in this cycle. You have to fill your needs first. That is understandable.

I think we will hear more after evaluations and whether Jabo qualifies.

Makes sense. If we get closer to NSD and we come up short somewhere else, could always use a spot for another back if it worked out. Of course I would not expect Kinlaw to wait around to find out. He will have a lot of options on where to play.

I guess it all depends on whether or not Marlin comes back, and if Jabo qualifies. And it may also depend on how Alden does this year. He's having a great spring. If it translates to the fall, he may be a bigger factor than we realize.

Given the RB depth chart, Alden's gonna HAVE to be a big factor.

Personally, I think we should cut ties with Tom Smith and free up a spot. I expect Lane to be back, and from what I've heard, Lee should score well enough to make it in. I know it may not be the most respectful thing to do, but Smith has yet to contribute in any form and I don't ever see him contributing during his time here. It would be best for both sides if we released him. He could play at a lower tier school, and we could bring in a back that will make an impact. Be it Kinlaw or whoever. Sometimes you have to make those kind of sacrifices in order to win.

They've also been quoted saying they have 2 RB spots this class.

Lol. Very obvious.

I think this was a case of VQ saying three RBs would be taken early in the process. Once they received more information, they realized the staff is actually probably going to take two dependent on the outcome of Jabo Lee's qualification.

Hurd and Paulk is a very good RB haul, if we just end up taking two. However, I have a feeling this could all change if Marlin Lane can't stay eligible either academically or from a disciplinary standpoint.

We definitely have other positions to address, such as DE, DT, OL, and WR.

IMO, that should be up to Tom Smith. He has not been in any trouble that I know of. The kid goes to class, he goes to practice and is doing what he can do. I am not a fan of dropping kids who are doing things right, just to make room. If he chooses to play out his time at Tennessee vs going to another school to see PT, I think he should be able to do just that. If your going to look for kids to cut loose, look for the ones not doing what they are supposed to be doing. JMO

So you would cut ties with a scholarship athlete that did not flourish under the previous staff? You should leave those type decisions to the current coaching staff. Would you cut ties with Alden Hill 'cause he got Mono? He seems to be doing okay this spring.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the new direction UT football seems to be taking. :hi:

Not saying I agree with the method, but to upgrade at a position is undeniable. Saban does it all the time. I would love to see Smith provide some depth and get some carries if he's good enough to contribute. But that's the thing, he's yet to make any noise. Alden Hill has come on strong, and has earned his place. He will see the field. Smith has been prone to injury, and has yet to make an impact. That's all I'm saying. Hopefully he turns it around this summer.

Also, let me add, that I only mean that as a last resort option. We may have enough room to take 3 backs with no problems. Lets just see how it plays out.

We shouldn't do EVERYTHING Saban does...helps with the whole living with oneself issue

I just used Saban as an example. There are plenty of other coaches that use the same process. It may not be right, but if players are not contributing, then that just seems like a waste of a scholarship to me. Then you have a talented back like Kinlaw who we have a great shot to land, but he may not make it in due to numbers. It's the coaches decision either way, and whatever they decide, I'll support that decision. That's kind of my job as a fan haha. We all want the same goal here. We just want to see Tennessee get back on top and competing for championships.

So by your criteria Hardesty would never have had his Sr year at UT.

So you want to win or be like lil nick? Satan wins a lot. Do not want to be bama.

Butch will win this battle (read this as good vs evil) UT shall triumph the right way not the saban way.

Soon :)

If Smith contributes, I will gladly eat crow. I just don't see him ever being a factor at RB. Hardesty showed flashes of potential the few times he did see the field leading up to his breakout Sr. season. Smith has yet to even see the field but maybe once or twice against Montana in 2011 if I recall correctly. But as I said before, I hope he proves me wrong!

There have been several discussions concerning the UT football recruiting/3rd RB option conversation on VN the last few days. Fortenberry isn't a UT coach, but VQ mods are fairly connected with the program and recruiting and I'd say Fortenberry gives a pretty telling statement right here. He answers that A) UT is not willing to take a 3rd TB ATP in the recruiting cycle and B) UT's staff must not believe Caleb Kinlaw is an "elite RB". Maybe UT's staff has more elite RBs in mind that could possibly still be a possibility? Maybe waiting to see on Lane's status and/or Jabo's eligibility? Or maybe they just want to fill up this class with more OL, DL, and LBs rather than a 3rd RB, unless they can find a stud. We will see soon, I'm sure. UT's 2014 recruiting class is filling up quickly.

Likes Tenn, but Vols aren't ready to take a third tailback right now unless he's elite.

Flowd or anyone else...

What other elite backs do you think the staff might currently be after that they would accept a commitment from right now? Or is it more of a situation to see how this class plays out before they try to add Kinlaw or someone else
