'14 OH QB DeShone Kizer

Most UA sites believe that the UA staff will only take 1 QB this class, especially considering after this season we will technically have 5 on scholarship still. So if that is true this may be good news for UT regarding Cornwell.

From ESPN tonight:

Alabama has five offers out to 2014 quarterbacks, although the Crimson Tide coaches would not accept a commitment from any just yet. One quarterback could be closing in on turning his scholarship into a legitimate offer soon, though.

Dual-threat quarterback DeShone Kizer (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) threw for Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier on Tuesday.

“It went really well, pride myself on how well I did,” Kizer said. “Earlier [in the spring] I worked out a few times and wasn’t spinning the ball as well, but today I was fired up and had the music going, the footwork was nice and shortened my motion and felt it went well.”

Following the throwing session, Kizer was still a little uncertain as to how Alabama handles quarterback offers. One question he had for Nussmeier was what exactly an Alabama offer meant and how many of the five quarterbacks have a commitable offer. Nussmeier told Kizer that the staff is not ready to accept a commitment from any of those five.

Nussmeier] said Coach Saban mentioned before he got on the plane ... that if I really impress him and Coach Nussmeier came back with the right things to say that I might be one of the first be able to commit,” Kizer said.

Bama makes me sick! This isn't the NFL combine saban. If I was a qb I'd tell him to shove the offer up somewere the sun doesnt shine. I dont know why kids want to go there hell I'd go to Duke over baana

When your winning championships, you can do things others can't. Both Kizer and Cornwell seem to be willing to let it play out with fighting for the 1 spot at bama. I would guess with Kizer asking the bama staff about when they would let a kid commit, it may have played into them pushing up the throwing workout for Cornwell to May vs the June camp. Just have to see how it plays out.

I personally love to see quotes like this. It verily oozes with arrogance that prospects should be able to see right through. By contrast, the more I observe the Butch Jones approach to people, the more elated I am he's our coach.

It is very arrogant to act like this with these 2 top notch QBs. I'm sure they feel like they are able to, because they are winning titles right now. I don't like it either, but it very well might push one of these guys in our direction. I would love to get either one (Kiser or Cornwell) and add to that being mad at being shunned by Bama. They will make it a point to be fired up for the Bama week like no other!

Just talked to an OSU fan and he believes they want Brandon Harris over Kizer. Not sure why this is, but he said he'd put his money (no pun intended about O$U) on Harris getting an offer over Kizer.

This could be good news for us...

Really hope Kizer is a Bammer. He hasnt shown much interest in UT and if Cornwell is a Bammer then I'm not sure Kizer is a Vol. But if Kizer is a Bammer I think Cornwell will be a Vol.

That is more less how I see it. I don't think we are that high on Kizer's list. LSU, OSU, several other schools IMO would have him more interested than UT if those offers came. If Corn is not headed to bama, I think he is a VOL. Cornwell looks to be the better QB by a wide margin between the 2 and that is why I can't see satan taking Kizer over him. Another reason I think bama pushed up the date to see Corn throw in Okie. They are worried these kids are not going to wait on each other.

As an OSU fan, I agree with this haha.

I don't dislike Kizer at all, his offers (LSU, Bama, etc) show that he is legit. But I saw quite a few of his games being that I lived in the Toledo area for the last few years, and I think his highlight tape is a bit deceptive. When I first watched his film he looked like a no-brainer to me, a potential Vince Young in the making (I realize everyone says that about every upcoming dual-threat QB). After watching quite a few TCC games in person last year, I still think he's a very raw talent. His arm in game-action isn't very consistent, strong but very inaccurate, he skipped balls to WRs on quite a few occasions that I saw, and the coaching staff didn't seem to trust him to throw much in the state tournament. That said, to me he's one of those guys that's really raw, but has an almost unlimited ceiling. His arm strength is elite. With one or two years of QB coaching at a major university to refine his passing I think he could be an absolute stud, one of those "I can't believe we didn't offer him when we had the chance," kind of guys.

The other issue with Kizer is that he's actually not THAT mobile, which is what the OSU spread offense is reliant on. That's another thing about his highlight tapes that I thought was a little deceptive. He's not really a dual-threat QB in the conventional sense, he'll likely be a drop-back passer on the college level. He may get an OSU offer now that Watson is out of the picture, but my guess is OSU will go after Harris and Barker first (if Barker doesn't commit elsewhere before it happens).

Sounds like it would be a good situation for him to come to Tennessee. He should have time to red-shirt and develop without pressure to contribute right away.

Most of my family is from Toledo and my Mom went to Central Catholic. We went to a game last year when visiting some family up there. I think this is spot on. Kid has a cannon, but was very inconsistent. I also agree that good coaching could make him a big star. The tools are definitely there.

DeShone Kizer*is a highly sought after young man. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound four-star quarterback has offers from all around the country but says he recently narrowed his list down to a new top six of*Alabama,*Arkansas,*LSU,*Tennessee,*Notre Dame*(no offer) and*Ohio State*(no offer).

“With the recruiting of qb’s so sped up now a days and everyone committing as fast as they can and school’s only taking one quarterback, the sooner the better for me,” he said. “I’m going to check out Tennessee, LSU and Alabama later this spring and if Notre Dame decides to offer I’ll go check them out also.

“The coaching staff and who I’m going to be with on daily basis, the offense and how it fits me, the vibe of the campus and lastly location,” he said. “My family is all really close. We’re tight knit so it’s important they can get to the games but if a further away school blows me away then location won’t be such a big factor.”

If he's making he's decision by June, then I think it's safe to say that he's holding out for Bama's QB just like Cornwell. I'm hoping Bama takes Kizer and we take Cornwell. I just don't feel confident in Kizer coming to Tennessee. Cornwell will be a Vol if Bama takes someone else IMO.

Cornwell is likely the chip that falls first.

I think Cornwell goes to Bama, and we get either Kizer or Barker, which is fine with me.

Tennessee*is dead in the thick of things with the Toledo, Ohio, native. When the rankings are done early next year, he could see himself as the No. 1 signal-caller in Ohio. However, Ohio State has yet to put a firm offer on the table and it may not ever.

When Kizer figures out how to step into throws on a consistent basis, he's going to thump some shoulder pads and dislocate some fingers. While highlights don't show his having to make many NFL-type throws, his upside is tremendous as a dual-threat guy if he's in the right system.

One thing you'll notice is that his Central Catholic team runs a similar offense to Vol coordinator Mike Bajakian's. Thus, a transition from a concepts standpoint wouldn't be as great as if he run the Wing-T or Triple-Option. Thus, he could concentrate on bringing the football to the hands of playmakers with more accuracy rather than having to figure out where to deliver the football.

Kizer's arm path is over the top, which is a plus because he will rarely see the ball fade, not have as much fish tail, and the ball will arrive with energy and more precision.

In regards to his skills as a runner, while he has some start/stop about him and doesn't shy from contact, Kizer knows his importance to his team and when to trickle out of bounds instead of absorbing unnecessary contact.

4-star QB DeShone Kizer of Toledo (Ohio) Central Catholic plans to visit UT before deciding in June. Hearing that Irish/Buckeyes probably won't offer. He seems pretty wide open if that's the case.

Kizer has a top six of Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee, Notre Dame (no offer), and Ohio State (no offer). However, he hasn’t visited any place in his top six just yet.

“The last week in May or the first week in June I plan on visiting LSU and Al

Offer-holding quarterback DeShone Kizer still has a top 6 that includes four schools that have offered, two of those (Notre Dame, Ohio State) have not. All things considered, Kizer is a Notre Dame lean and will likely commit to the Irish based on academics, location and tradition if they pull the trigger. Otherwise, the 6-5 signal-caller may sign with a school outside his comfort zone. With Brandon Harris getting an offer from home-state LSU and being asked to commit by coach Les Miles, Ohio State may lose out on Harris just as it has Deshaun Watson. If Harris to LSU comes to fruition, the Buckeyes may move on Kizer, although he is believed to be down their board. Long story longer, Tennessee has a shot at Kizer as it lingers in his list of top schools as others aren't showing much interest.
