Top 10 defensive linemen from The Opening

7- Joe Henderson, Cleveland (Ohio) Shaker Heights- Because of state of Ohio rules, Henderson did not compete in pads. During his first rep, which came against Robinson, he was completely stonewalled (Robinson showed why he’s the top tackle in the country on that one), but after that he settled in and showed off some of the ability that made him the MVP of the Columbus Nike Camp in early June. The Tennessee commit backed up some stellar testing numbers from Tuesday (6-foot-3, 228-pounds, 4.76 in the 40, 4.1 in the shuttle). He will need some time to develop at the college level, but is exceptionally promising.

Yes, completely agree. Especially defensive front 7 players. That initial 8-10 yard burst is far more necessary than a great 40. This is a shuttle time that's on par with the 4.4 guys too.

I'm going to have to flat out disagree with any conversation that does not first acknowledge, that the 400m is the gold standard

40 and shuttle times aren't even in the same galaxy as 400m times, no argument there.the comparison can't even be made, that's why I didn't bring up the 400m, LOL.

Tennessee commit*Joe Henderson*is a smooth, agile pass rusher, but when big blockers get their hands on him like Cameron Robinson did, he has some trouble. He must put on some weight and strength, but the tools are there.

Same thing as with Bennett. More backside=more sacks. Could be a 5-star with 20 more pounds. Just a speed rusher at this point. Sorta like Dwight Freeney’s just a speed rusher, but you get what I mean.

These things are rarely balanced. And Suh is going to be more of a big-man coach. Henderson is pure speed. He’s even lining up wide-9. If he had the guy Hand had he would’ve had three sacks.

BTW, Henderson is the LaMarr Woodley kind of guy.

DT's should be jumping to play next to this kid. Opens up more room between the tackles for them to move.

Robinson owns alot of people, that's why he's the #1 OT in the nation. He was #3 on 247's list of top OL performers at the Opening, without playing in pads.

You think Henderson will record multiple double-digit sack seasons?

I like the enthusiasm, but I'm going to remain cautious on my expectations.

Henderson is a very talented player, but he is also undersized and raw as an athlete. He is very young and has plenty of time to gain size & strength. But I don't know about him recording multiple seasons with 10+ sacks, as he hasn't even completed a college practice yet.

Leonard Little was one of the best pass rushers to ever play football for the University of Tennessee, yet he only had one double-digit sack season during his 3-year career. UT has also had several high-profile, 5* type DE recruits come through the last 5-10 years that never had any type of success rushing the passer. Ben Martin & Walter Fisher come to mind. Gerald Williams & Rae Sykes also. He never made it to UT, but wasn't Abrams-Ward going to play some DE? Jacques Smith hasn't done much at DE either.

UT has signed numerous 4* & 5* DL over the last decade or so, and most have been busts. It has been frustrating as a fan to watch the atrocious pass rush UT has fielded as of late. I hope it improves soon, but I'm going to wait until I'm proven wrong. Good luck to Henderson and his future @ UT though. He has great potential.

Yeh he's undersized but he's a 230lb speed rusher that's going into his senior year. He will be very good for us. He will easily be 250+ by the time our coaches plan on throwing him into a game. Relax. However I agree about the pass rush. But I think some of our edge guys will surprise this year. There is alot of young ones like lewis,and vereen. Curt along with Jaq will be playing a more natural position for their skill set.
