SWANSBORO, N.C. -- DeAndre Thompkins is one of the top junior prospects in North Carolina. The Swansboro (N.C.) wide receiver is already closing in on double-digit scholarship offers. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound playmaker has eight scholarship offers.
Schools such as Duke, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, and South Carolina and Tennessee are pursuing him. Thompkins said he is also interested in Alabama, Baylor, Florida, and LSU.

Wonder if this offer means they coaches aren't confident about landing Kitt

I'm not sure if we'll get Kitt, but it's too early in the recruiting season to be offering guys because others fell through. There are too many talented WRs still out there. I think the staff just likes Thompkins that much.

I think CBJ and staff are doing the smart thing and trying to fill as many spots as possible while they are hot on the recruiting trail. Better to have the kids onboard now and loving the VOLS just in case the season does not turn out to be an 8-9 win type of year. If the kids have been committed for months, there is a better chance they stick even with a 6 win season. A bowl game is a must this year at minimum.

Clemson also offered and it's assumed South Carolina probably will soon.

It's not even the evaluation period yet for coaches. Unless numbers are extremely tight (and even then it's unlikely) no school is throwing out offers to fall back prospects, for lack of a better term, at this point.

UT might not push for the guy as hard as others until Kitt/whoever are off the table, but they clearly like him.

I would have to disagree on the "throwing out offers" statement. ALOT of teams are throwing out offers now. It's almost a must right now so you have fall back options later on if you need them. Just because a kid is tossed an offer now, does not mean he would be allowed to commit.

“Number one would be academics, how do they deal with their players, academics-wise. Number two would be how their program is doing football-wise,” Thompkins said. “Are their coaches moving every which way? Are they staying? Are they committed? What are they trying to develop?*

Really? Kind of surprise to me. Didn't think he end up North. To bad for O'brien all the restrictions they're going to have. Love for them to beat around OSU in that girly conference
