He clearly is a RS develop kind of player if that weight is true but he has elite speed and frame to put on weight. We are few years away from knowing how this one turns out IMO.
It's kind of funny you mention the timing. I figured the timing was associated with watching a lot of Oregon film the last couple of days and repeatedly saying "Damn! That guy is fast too!" I don't think we have anyone on our scout team that can come close to emulating the speed of Oregon. CBJ said as much in his interview yesterday. Speed is on their minds.
These were my exact thoughts. He's a developmental guy, probablly won't see him for a couple years as they mold him but he's got upside in 2-3 areas on the field.
OR prep and our lack of speed is in my mind the reason we pulled the trigger. Other factors could be at play but it's obvious what his greatest attribute is, raw speed and athleticism.

Butch seems to be a blue collar coach. I expect to see a handful of blue collar players every class with raw talent. Those guys that will happily take a RS and a couple years of not playing to develop for the chance to play in orange. Those are the kind of guys that put a fire under the 4&5*'s in practice. He's done it in practice reports before about walk ons. This kid fits that mold.

Prepping for the Oregon game, & the coaches said, 'we too damn slow'

Glad to have some speed coming in for sure

& btw, the #1 NFL pick this year was a 2* coached up by CBJ. BOOM!

“coach jones had pulled me into the locker room (after tennessee’s camp) and said, ‘stay in touch, because we really like you. We’re just trying to make things work so we can give you the offer,’”

“i called them back after i talked to my parents — maybe, probably seven minutes (later),” moseley said. “(martinez) said, when i come in, i have a chance to make an impact. They’re light at corner, so i have a great opportunity coming in. He said, ‘e, are you ready?’ and i said, yes, sir.”

moseley said there’s at least a chance he could graduate from dudley in december and enroll at tennessee in january, but he’s not sure yet whether that will be an option for him.

“i have to talk to my counselor tomorrow about it and see what they say,” he said. “i think it’s definitely a possibility.”

OK. Gotta be a story here beyond that.

This may be a "diamond in the rough" No one had ever heard of Arian Foster, when Randy Sanders offered him.

No one had even heard of the Sullen twins who played on the offensive line. They started as walk ons but were very productive that one season.

Coach can either evaluate talent OR he can't. I personally think that he can because of all of the players that made it to the NFL from his former teams. None of the guys he recruited at Central or at Cincinnati were 5* but several made it to the pro's. He saw talent and recruited them and helped them develope it.

The first thing this board and Vols fans need to do is stop looking at STARS!

Haha good luck with that. A lot of us orange faithful are star gazers. I let the coaches make those decisions, but I still get excited when I see 4 and 5 stars commit lol.

The only way to evaluate a player is with your eyes. Recruiting services are wrong more than they are right. Plus their biased! As long as he has the speed and agility, coach can teach technique. I bet this kid is better than we know.

In a way I agree. But this is the world we live in. And whether it should be that way or not, it makes an impact on perception. You read where recruits say "they have a top recruiting class coming in, a lot of good players, so we can help get this program back on top", etc.

Anyways yes stars don't mean everything. But they can have an impact on players decisions and perception

Completely agree with the sentiment.... perception becomes reality at some point. However, we're playing an Oregon team on Saturday that, according to recruiting service rankings, doesn't have as much talent as our team. Yet..... they're the #2 team in the country and favored in Vegas by 29.5

I trust this staff. Think this kid is a diamond in the rough.... 6'1 180, elite acceleration and speed (4.36) and very good production at corner as a junior.

Bull****, don't get me wrong I am happy with this pickup and am always perfectly fine with a staff taking a couple of projects that they see potential in each class. However, there are very few cases of teams that are in the position that we want to be in that consistently take classes consisting of solely 2 and 3 stars. Stars do matter.

Welcome Moseley!!!

With CBJ's history, his success has been highly dependent on finding "under the radar" players. I am sure the staff knows exactly what they are looking at and don't need a star rating from a scouting service to make their decision. What would that say about Jones and staff if they were unable to evaluate talent independently?

Serious question: Why do some people on here trust a recruiting service evaluator over this staff? Who gets paid more? Who has a bigger profile with more on the line? Those recruiting evaluators would kill for Butch's salary and yet some on here trust their evaluation more than our staff's?

Don't know if I see 4.36 40 speed, but his hands and ability to track the ball in flight seem very good. They play him at WR just as much if not more than CB in the video. When you look at our current roster of WR's, they have all the metrics you could want in the size/speed of a highly sought after class at their respective positions, and I still have high expectations that some will be breakout players this season. However, I have seen several cases of stone hands from our current crew both on the field and in practice (KNS videos, ESPN, etc). Any chance we see Moseley more at WR than CB?
