'14 MI DE Malik McDowell

I don't believe I said I thought we were an option.
I asked what others thought. Personally, I'm half and half on his coming here.

Didn't mean to come across as crass. I just saw nothing in the article to suggest we were even in contact with him, let alone an option. Knowing that, I've no reason to believe he has any interest or intentions of coming to Knoxville.

your absurd opinion on states rights aside, please tell me if a top DE said he wants to come to UT, you would tell that half that is against it to take a long walk off a short pier, because currently we are not in a position to tell someone we don't want the headaches other then if he doesn't have academic standing to get into UT.

Btw I think there was a shooting at the Fort a few nights back so I guess with your logic he can't come here either.

Touched a nerve, did I?

You and all your narrow-minded, jumping to conclusion ilk with your snide assumptions that if someone mentions shootings it somehow impunge on your state rights, I say this. I was referring to an article I read regarding the mother's concerns. Based on where they live, references to getting out of Michigan and away from certain people for whatever reason. I did what others here and on other forums did, I speculated on possible reasons for her motive. It had nothing to do with your state rights. However, it is a fact that in Florida we're beginning to see people with certain attitudes using stand your ground as an excuse to target certain members of the population. Even looking for, according to some, provoking confrontations so as to "justify" shootings. And it's not just in Florida now, seems to be spreading. That's why I thought it odd she'd suggest Florida State. I had no plan to offend Seminole and Gator fans like you and your buds on this Vols board.

I have as much a right to state what I think as you do. Finally, my comments are not mere speculation. I pay attention to the news. More than that, I have been out for walks, to restaurants, and elsewhere with friends and witnessed firsthand behaviors meant to provoke a confrontation for no reason, Even had 3 people put their hands into the jacket flap as if ready to draw a gun, and one guy in a restaurant who pulled back his jacket to show he actually had a concealed weapon, point his finger at my friend who was minding his own business and make a shooting motion with his hand. So until you have lived what people like my friends have lived or witnessed what I have witnessed, you're in no position to judge me. I'm all for self-defense, even stand your ground laws. The law isn't the problem. Just like religion, it's what you do with it that is the problem. And for people like this boys mom, it very likely is the problem. Detroit gun play is more than bad enough. Given what happens in Florida, I remain surprised she would suggest he go there. So again I apologize to you a Seminole and Gator fan and your Florida buddies.

Your post shows you're a hothead who fits the profile of a gun toting provocateur. I've met your type all over the country in my travels and residences. However, I hope I'm dead wrong. We're already an international laughingstock due to the perceptions our internal behaviors give of the USA. My real hope is we as a nation pull away from the senselessness of current societal folly and be truly great nation we're supposed to be. Probably a pipe dream but, hey. . . that's me.

Thank you for a perfectly sensible and relevant response. Just a note, I think I personally said I'm only half and half about his coming here. But if he did Butch is probably exactly the type of coach he'd need. In any case, it's an interesting situation. I remain a bit leery. You may recall the Bryce Brown matter. Probably completely different circumstances but when parents are deeply into things like this, it often isn't a very good thing for the kid or the school that wasn't really his preference. Will be interesting to see what comes out of this.

Wow more unsubstantiated speculation, assume much. You know what they say when you assume.

Here you are pipsqueak:

Straw man. Straw man.

The Straw man came with a tongue.
There was a job to be done.
And so they sent for the bugger, yes, that one.
The Straw man.

And as he snidely roved,
Where his pal violently ploved
They knew he'd live or he'd die by the code
Of the Straw man.

The man who never rides alone
And all that he'll ever own,
Is just his tongue, and he's known
As the Straw man.

I think she threw him out of the house. Maybe why it's said he showed up for signing dressed in a running outfit rather than regular clothes. I hate that he's enduring this. And I don't know a darn thing as to why she's so against Michigan. It must be more than you claim above because it's not just MSU but UM and the whole state.

Could be with all the shootings happening in Detroit, she wants him in as safe a location as possible. Though I don't think Florida State is a good choice with the stand your ground laws and people using it as an excuse to kill someone who even blows their nose with a red hanky or wears a hood instead of an Irish cap. Football players have been gunned down, I think most recent was in Connecticut. So she might be trying to get him away to where she knows or believes his chances are better for living long enough to fulfill his dreams.

But while I'd not object to his coming to the UT, I'd be a bit leery due to our experience with that Arnett guy.
Plus he sounds like he really wants MSU--so would he be happy at the UT? However, CBJ just might be the type of coach this kid needs and would make his mom ultra happy to boot. So let's just see what happens.

Sort of an extremist view of Florida. Citizens do, and should, have rights in this country to protect themselves. The problem is not the stand your ground laws but the thugs that caused them to become law in the first place. Florida has more deaths caused by drugs and gangs than any sort of questionable innocent victim murders.

You are using a biased opinion to tell someone else they have a biased opinion? How is that not bigotry?

Returning to our regular programming:

Malik McDowell, MSU, and his momma.
What will the outcome be?
Blow your mind on that.

Come to UT. We won't kill ya!

At least someone here has a sense of humor.

While I'd not second guess CBJ, I'm not sure it would be a 100% good idea for him to be here. He prefers MSU. He might not be able to give his all to Tennessee under the circumstances. But I'd also not second guess his mom, she knows a heck of a lot more about why she wants him out of state than you, me, or anyone on VN does. As I understand it, we did offer him but apparently didn't pursue him. On that basis was my question of if he'd end up at the UT if he does venture out of state as per mom's wishes.
