To turn people away? Yes, it is called loyalty. CBJ preaches family and that includes loyalty. If he is going to accept your commitment, then it is good in May as well as January. That is JMO.

Not only that but the next year's class will realize that if they have a legitimate interest in UT they better get on it. Also, this seems to make the football program look more special than others at least from a fan's perspective.

How do you know he didn't accept their offer conditionally? Dooley did that, accepted the offer under xyz conditions. If conditions aren't met, whatever they may be, the kid is let go. It's a two way street, a la Santos.

Not to be argumentative but... Dooley sucked.

I would think recruits know that if they don't qualify or they get into serious trouble in some way, their scholarship could be pulled. Another thing to consider is IF the recruits once committed are not to take other visits, that kind of closes their recruitment and IMO the staff MUST honor the scholarship if they qualify and stay out of trouble. Imagine the fallout if a kid committed to Tennessee in May and did not take any other visits and was all VOL. Then the week before NSD he is told his spot is no longer available and good luck. The media would crucify the coaching staff for hanging a kid out to dry like that.

No coach would do that, although plenty of players do that. A coach may say "if you don't get your weight or speed or grades to a certain point a month before nsd, we'll let you go."

You can't say welcome to the family one minute and cut them loose the next. ESP after Butch quotes and I Love You comments. He seems like a good man and will keep his promises to the kids and their parents. I don't want our coach to leave someone twisting in the wind a la saban. The Rb last year comes to mind. Justin something. If you're gonna cut them later don't take the commitment. I think Butch is a stand up man and will honor his commitment to them if they reciprocate it.

Top OL prospect Damian Prince of McNamara trims list of schools to 10

Top OL prospect Damian Prince of McNamara trims list of schools to 10

There was a point last month when Damian Prince felt ready to commit to one of the nearly 40 Division I football programs that have offered him scholarships. The process had started to wear on the highly touted senior offensive lineman from McNamara, as fan messages, address requests, check-in calls and even death threats flooding his phone and social media.

But after a talk with McNamara Coach Keith Goganious and a bit of self-reflection, Prince realized that his college decision was one he needed to make on his own terms. Prince’s plan is to now take a gradual approach, one that began recently with him snipping his laundry list of schools down to 10.

On Monday, Prince revealed that list consists of Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Prince will next cut the list to six before stopping all communication with college coaches on August 8 to focus on his senior campaign with the Mustangs.

Commitment is a two way street. As long as a kid keeps his nose clean, does not have a major injury, and does his part (diet, grades, etc); I fully expect Butch to turn away a 4 or 5 star who is a Johny come lately. Not fair to ask for a brick to be returned, that's no way, IMO, to build a foundation or a brotherhood. When a kid commits we all go "Boom VFL" not "Boom until someone with more stars comes along."

Could not have said it any better. I have been hoping we would land a coach/staff for a while that felt this way and would value a commitment. As long as the kids are not looking around, they are VFL as far as I am concerned. If a commitment decides to take a trip, he's doing so at the risk of losing his spot. I think it would be great to have the class filled in the next couple months and then the coaches can really focus on 2015. The way things are going, that class could be half full by NSD 2014.

Agree. Jason Swain said the same thing. Also said you will get a bad rep with the High School coaches and burn those hard to establish bridges by doing this.

No one ever doubted Butch would hold true to the commits. The question was whether or not there'd be room for a guy like Prince. No one turns away a 5* tackle of his caliber. Period. Someone currently uncommitted might get bumped but it wouldn't be Prince. The staff knows better than you where they stand with players and how selective they need to be from here.

I can think of a reason why you would turn away a guy like that. Over time a group of guys such as our class grow together. The more time they spend together, the less they are going to want to be separated. A strong bond with your players is more important than one player.

However, it may be justified to kicking a guy out for a guy like Prince. Just playing devil's advocate.

Size-Stregth-Athleticism
Size is no issue with Prince as he is a tall kid with good bulk and with some time in a college weight program and a little reworking of his big and long frame he could still pack on more good size.

Pass Protection
In pass protection he has the feet, size and arm length to present a very tough obstacle for rushers to try and work around. Flashes good knee bend and deep set ability, but can get tall and open too quickly at times. Can slide and mirror with the athleticism to quickly react and get himself out of trouble. Is at his best when he can jump set rushers and quickly punch, latch on and anchor. Needs to work to be a better cut blocker.

Run Blocking

With his size and good raw strength he can be a people mover in the run game. Flashes the ability to get out of his stance and into defenders with good quickness. When he gets moving and makes contact, he can deliver a jarring blow. Displays good lower-body flexibility and despite his size he can lower and make contact with good pad level and when he rolls his hips he can just walk defenders off the ball. Does need to watch his pad level, be more consistent with it and improve his hand placement. Too often he can end up with his hands outside the defender's frame and needs to gain leverage with consistent positioning inside. He can move well in space for a big boy and when he utilizes good angles he can get a hat on moving targets with crushing results.

Toughness
This is a big boy who is more than capable of getting things done in the trenches. Big, strong guy who can engulf defenders and just overpower them at his current level and, as a result, can seem to get a little lax in the little things and needs to be more consistent with technique.

Bottom Line
Prince is a big dude with very good natural ability and when he utilizes it, he can be highly productive. But at this stage he doesn't always seem to be truly maximizing those abilities. Is a very good tackle prospect at this stage who, if he can achieve better consistency and squeeze the most from his skills, could develop into one of the top tackles in college football.

Crowning Prince: A look at OT's top 10 - Football Recruiting - Midwest Region Blog - ESPN

Says top 10 and why each school has a chance.so an insider wanna let us know what it says on why UT has a chance to land him.

Doesn't really give much away.

Right now, the 6-foot-5, 286-pound Prince has a top 10 of Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Why the Volunteers make sense: It’s more than just the obvious fact Tennessee has a need for bodies in the trenches. The Volunteers seem to be the hot team this year as they are ranked third in the nation with 10 ESPN 300 pledges among their 23 commitments.

Pretty sure he's a big Florida State lean

Here's what it says about Free Shoes U...

Why the Seminoles make sense: Expect Florida State to be around when he narrows his list again. The Seminoles’ coaching staff has really hit it off with Prince. Winning is important to the tackle so being with a contender means something.

The Tabor to Maryland predictions are starting to flood in.

Prince and Tabor would be outstanding.

I agree with you guys, hope he stays home if not with us. Here's the MD write up.

Why the Terrapins make sense: It’s much more than the hometown feel. He’s very comfortable around the coaches, and the Terrapins have talked about using him as someone to build around. He’s visited the campus countless times, so he definitely focused on Maryland more than some might think.
