While nobody is around to go crazy, how much would this kid help next year? Work is crazy and I haven't had any time to research him, and I'm lazy and don't want to read through the thread. Lol
I know Scout's Randy Moore had a write up about the visit and how it went. From what little I could read, it said the visit went "great." Saw another blurb about him being around 215 now too.
His father I believe said he was up to 215. It's hard to turn down guys who are as athletic as he is and are 6'10+. If it was known he was approaching 6'11 and he was a 2015 guy I'd imagine he'd have a ton of high major offers.
He's supposedly shot up from 6'8" to 6'11" in the past few months, that's the good news, the bad news is he's ~205lbs.
He was rated as a top 100 player by scout before their last update, but fell down in their new rankings.
I've maintained that I don't think you can expect to get much from him next year, unless he just lives in the weight room I don't think he will be ready.
With that said his upside is possibly higher than anyone else's, and he's a perfect example of the kind of recruit you take who might be a "project". He's athletic and can run, and has a very solid 15-18 foot jumper, those kinds of guys don't grow on trees.
Damn that's thin, would be the perfect RS candidate if we had that luxury. Thanks for the info, I usually try and research guys myself but haven't had the time lately, I greatly appreciate it.
Why would he have more next year? Coaches would likely shoot higher at least initially, with the lack of options front court options out there Owens has to just about top the list...not sure his stock could get any higher (without playing games).
Because he grew from 6'8 to 6'10.5 from fall to spring, while he was committed to another school. There's a big difference in interest level from a 6'8 athlete to a 6'11 athlete. Now he's on the market at a time when a good number of schools are full up. I'll even go on record now and say that if we land him, that was something working in Tyndall's favor, like the Stokes mid-term enrollee situation.
Seems like mixed signals about the kid. He was top 100 & now he isnt yet athletic & 6'11" would seem to indicate he should go up in the rankings not down. Also I have heard at least two different bb recruiting gurus on the radio say that he would be by far the best get of this class. Not next year but the next few years after that. Yet its us & a token ut martin visit & seaton hall? Athletic near 7ft players w speed & a mid range jump shot dont exactly grow on trees, ask doug roth (youngsters can look him & the finger up) & the ones that do usually have a lot of good offers. so is it that in the age of one and dones, kids that their bodies need to mature are questionable gets to schools now? Why doesnt he have more offers? Why Ohio in the first place?
I honestly believe his ranking drop was due to his commitment to Ohio. These services are selling something and Ohio isn't the university that's selling things. We see it in both basketball and football, once a kid commits to a higher profile school, their rankings rise, lower profile school often gets them shuffled downward.
If nothing else, I love his potential as a shot blocker early on in his career. It's tough to shoot over 6'10 guys who are leapers. Ideally he'd be able to redshirt like Tyrus Thomas. But even if he doesn't, I think he can contribute defensively.
Then why didn't bigger schools come after him once he decommited?
Seton Hall, Temple, UT- Martin and Tennessee?
Like I've already pointed out hometown Maryland had multiple open scholarships, why haven't they even reached out?
I think the kid will be good eventually, but I think you're over hyping him a bit.
I am not a big fan of red shirting basketball players. Sure, it may help a player or two. But many basketball players don't stay 4 years anymore. If he has decent talent by his junior year at 6'11", then he could leave early. If he graduates in 4 years with a redshirt, then he could transfer. You can be a solid player without being a pro prospect, but I am just not always in favor of possibly giving up a year in basketball. Football is totally different.
