'14 JUCO WR Eric Lauderdale (previous UT commit)

"I know they are going to show me the academic side," Lauderdale said. "I want to major in business, and I'm sure they are going to show me how that side will work. I'm also interested to see how the players interact and how the coaches are with the players."

I like that he wants to major in Business...the Business building and great programs they have should put us over the top this weekend.

I could see this one and Poona being locked up before Bates commits on the 2nd/3rd of July.

It would've been really nice though. I don't know how well CP would've done in Coach Jake's offense

I hope you are joking. CP would have been electric in Coach Jake's offense. The offense is designed to get the ball in the playmakers hands in space. CP would have had an even better year IMO.

Yes and it also demands precise routes and discipline. Something CP lacks. Most of his big plays last year were deep balls and sweeps not exactly precision routes

Maybe he, Tennessee golfer, should stick to golf.

If you read the 3 part article about CBJ and Brian Kelly you would understand tn golfer is right. CBJ's offense while at UC needed precise route running by the Wr's because the offense is all about timing. Even though that article is from CBJ's second year at UC I believe it is still very relevant because of the type of WR's that CBJ is recruiting. Shorter compared to Hunter or CP.but they are fast, agile types of WR's that can run the right route. I don't believe CP would of done as well with CBJ's type of offense from what I have read. IMO. and if you haven't read that article, I suggest it, it is pretty cool

The fallacy of this CP conversation is the presumption that this coaching staff would have made getting CP the ball a mid-level priority the way Dooley did.

Any halfway competent coach would have gotten him more touches regardless of his rough route running.

Or with his lack of concern for his grades and going to class the coaches would have sat him on the bench. Character means something to this staff. If a kid is just going to use UT to springboard to the NFL while doing very little to nothing in the classroom, good chance he does not play for this staff, Juco or not. JMO

Kid knew he was one and done. Why focus on grades when football is where you'll make money? Has nothing to do with character, it's smart.

I mean, it was 1 semester. He could have Atleast buckled down in class for a semester. Not that difficult.

I understand the kid knew. If I were a coach, he would be held to the same standards as every other player on the team. What would have happened if in game 5 he had tore an ACL or broke a leg? As a coach, I would expect players to go to class and at least attempt to be a "student athlete" while claiming to be a VOL. JMO

I personally belve that if you entered JUCO you should be mandated to remain in regular college for your remaing two years. Obviously you couldn't take care of business in the classroom. Our society clearly holds athleticism and sports above academia and it is both sad and pathetic on our part.

College should be a privilege but many athletes are there because they can run fast or handle a ball. It is insulting.

/End rant.

I would not even be that strict with it. 1 year, is all I ask. The kid needs to be in good standing grade wise for the 1 year he will be there. If at ANY point concerns with his GPA or class attendance becomes an issue, pull him off the field. If that were the rule, the kids would follow it or head to the arena league.

If that happened, one semester of slacking off iseasy to make up. GGetting better at your trade is admirable.

Or kids would go to schools where that wasn't the case then go to the NFL. . Econ 101.

Yes. It is expected for the other 98% of the population to be able to read and write. Obviously many athletes are both gifted and intelligent. But the CP's and Eddie Lacy's of the world shouldn't be given hand outs because they're athletic.

Pretty sure they can read and write. Why should they not be given hand outs, other than your opinion that they are lesser people? Why should the elite musician be given a hand out? Or the history buff?

That is what I was getting at. I think ANY school should require a Juco kid coming in to at least make an attempt to go to class and keep a decent GPA. It's not that hard, just take a little effort and someone making sure the kid is held accountable.

So far the response from the players appears to have been to step it up in the class room. This APR stuff is making me think that a lot of the issues with GPA and kids being intelligible falls on what even most Dooley apologists recognized was a lack of accountability.
