'14 JUCO DT Davonte Lambert (Auburn Commit 12/18/13)

Not to derail this thread, but I think you can... if you have an elite coach. Petrino did very well at Arkansas and they weren't exactly setting the world on fire with recruiting. South Carolina has been the second or third best team in the SEC over the last three years without top rated classes (although Spurrier's clearly landed a few elite recruits along the way). With some notable exceptions (e.g., Clowney), Dooley arguably recruited at a similar level to both of them, from a simple Rivals rating standpoint.

But, regardless - Dooley clearly was not an elite coach, so he wasn't helping himself by not always signing elite talent.

Over the last several years, UT's classes have, on the average, ranked in the top half of the SEC and above SCe and Arkansas. However, along with coaching issues, UT had one of the worst attrition rates. Unfortunately, much of the talent being signed didn't last very long in Knoxville. Even the best of coaches will not win many games in those circumstances.

Hopefully, going forward, the Vols will will have a more stable roster, as well as capable staff.

The point is if you don't have good talent, you are going to be 8-4, 9-3... may even back into the SECCG if your division is down. But you are still not good enough to beat the upper echelon consistently with lesser talent and great coaching.

Point noted. But USCe and Arkansas have peaked much higher than 9-3. USCe is second only to Alabama in the SEC over the last two years, in terms of overall wins. They don't do it in impressive fashion, but Spurrier certainly knows how to win ball games.

We'll find out for sure how good they are this year. While I personally think they are overrated, I've read some analysts who believe this will be Spurrier's best team - mainly because of the experience at quarterback. We'll see how far he takes them.

If we get him, this would be another head to head battle that CBJ won.

Yep. He's clearly got what it takes. Imagine a year or two from now when CBJ can sell a winning program, in addition to everything else he's selling today.

As we've said the last few weeks, while most people are picking the Gators, and I guess that's beginning to change, we believe Tennessee is a very real factor with Lambert.
