The University of Louisville lost its highest-ranked basketball commitment on Friday night when five-star guard JaQuan Lyle announced that he is withdrawing his pledge to the Cardinals.
Lyle, a 6-foot-5 combo guard from Evansville, Ind., attends Huntington (W.Va.) Prep.
I just felt like I needed to make sure I made the right decision for me, he said in a phone interview. I didnt really think Louisville was the best decision for me.
He said he would continue to consider U of L if the Cards continue to recruit him, but he was unsure if U of L will do it.
He said there was no single factor that led to his decision except that Im trying to make sure I make the right decision for myself.
Lyle, who committed to the Cardinals on June 26, said that he had tried to call but hadnt reached U of L coach Rick Pitino or assistant Kevin Keatts to discuss his decision as of late Friday night, but he felt obligated to confirm it publicly when a report from Yahoo! Sports was temporarily posted online that said he was pulling his pledge.
Lyle said it would be Saturday before he discusses any schools he plans to consider going forward.
Tennessee, Florida, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio State were some of his top choices before he committed to Louisville.
He is the second top-level guard to withdraw a pledge to U of L in the past six weeks. Ballard High Schools Quentin Snider, who was committed to the Cards for nearly two years, reopened his recruitment in late July and committed to Illinois on Thursday.
Sniders decision to withdraw his commitment was due primarily to the volume of high-level backcourt players, including, at that time, Lyle, who were slated to be on the roster in the coming years.
But Lyle said that was not a major factor in his decision to withdraw his pledge because I thought I could come in and play right away. I was going to have to battle, and it wasnt going to be easy. So it didnt play a major role.
