'14 GA S Cortez McDowell (UT Signee 2/5/14)

CB:

Gaulden: Strengths: Aggressive style, playmaking ability, tackling ability, size for the position, instincts

Weakness: Technique will be a bit raw at CB

Berry: Strengths: Elite athleticism, ball skills, instincts, college ready size wise, and a playmaker.

Weakness: Hasn't gotten to play the position in HS. Is more athlete than CB right now.

Payne: Strength: Tough, can tackle with the best, fast, quick, and good natural hips. Also has natural coverage skills.

Weakness: Size, has trouble with big WRs due to this height issue.

Moseley- Strengths: Elite Athlete, great instincts, and wonderful height for the position.

Weakness: Weight is the big thing here. He's around 160. Will have to put on weight.

So now that you've listed these. Who do you think will take Coleman's spot our of these 4. And do you mind doing safeties as well?

I wouldn't worry a ton about Moseley's weight. In then UT program he will add 10
Lbs easy before end of fall maybe more.

Got alot of guys that can really tackle coming in. It's gonna be nice not having to hold my breath on short passes and WR screens worrying about missed tackles.

I think we see the proof in Cam Sutton. But my question is, is any of Moseley, Gaulden, Berry, or Payne more physically and fundamentally ready than Cam?

JMO here.

Moseley- he's an EE. I want him to be in the 175-180 lb range in the fall. I think he has a good chance to get in the rotation, but I don't think he starts next year.

Payne- he's an EE. I think he plays bigger than his size. I think he has good tools to work with. His movement is very fluid. Put together well. Fundamentals are there. He's primed for the nickel spot.

Gaulden- Even though he's not an EE, I still think he has a very good opportunity to be a day 1 starter... whether it be at Safety or CB. I think he ends up at CB though. Kid is obviously a great tackler. Superb closing speed. Great length. He's 6'0 with rangy arms. He lacks technique because he's played Centerfield safety HS. Star in the making.

Berry- Not an EE. Right around 6'0. Can run with anybody in the country. As soon as he steps foot on campus, he'll be the fastest guy on our team. Great bloodline. The tools are there to work with for CWM. I think he'll be a ST killer his Frosh year and may see time in the secondary in some mop up duty.

How I would rate these guys based on their skillset:

1. Payne
2. Gaulden
3a. Moseley (being an EE is the difference) 3b. Berry

All JMO

Safety Prospects:

McDowell- Strengths: 6'3 and can run. He also is one of the hardest hitters on the back end in this class. Has great range with his height to speed ratio. Also has good ball skills and instincts due to playing WR also.

Weakness: Needs a bit more polish which will come under Martinez. Also can fill out his frame even more which I expect will happen in the S&C program.

Kelly Jr.- Strengths: Athletic, hard hitter, and good speed. He's also one of the most technically sound players you'll find coming out. Reads keys exceptionally well for a young kid. Has great ball skills and instincts too.

Weakness: He's not quite as big as some may think. And has played against weak competition his whole HS career. So he's going to have to make a significant jump in on the field play.

Just like the corners, I see too much roughness to pencil them in as taking upperclassmen’s spots.

I know you don’t much care for Coleman, but I think he’s going to full-time nickel anyways. And one more year knowing where to be and having some young turk breathing down your neck, trying to take your spot works wonders for a player’s concentration.

Coleman to nickel next yr is going to look just like Toney this yr

Nickel CBs have to be anticipatory, aggressive and hands on. We've seen none of that in 3yrs of Coleman outside.
