'14 GA RB Treyvon Paulk (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Yes he could. The way it works is, if he redshirted later this one could be changed to medical redshirt. So technically this one wont be a medical one because its only done if needed. They start off just using a redshirt because they are unlikely to need to use another one, however if the need arises then this one could easily be changed to medical. So for all intents and purposes it will be a medical one if needed. He doesn't have to get injured again.

I would think for a kid to qualify for a medical redshirt in college, the injury in question would have to have happened while he is IN college.

Recruit to the NCAA,"Yeah I should get a 6th year". "Ya see I pulled a hamstring in the 7th grade".

After reading more in the Evan Berry thread it looks like he may have to be injured again to get a 6th year if needed.

Just justifying a need for an immediate contributor rather than a delayed one.

Why would anyone ever need to justify taking an immediate contributor over a delayed one?

Would I take a healthy Scott or James and delay Paulk a year IF he agreed to it? Absolutely!

If Paulk RS in 2014 it will be very easy to get a 6th year IF the next RS yr is also due to an injury.

This first year missed could easily be proven to be a medical decision and not a coaching choice. The 2nd year missed has to be the same.

This isn't accurate. Both RS years have to be medical to get a 6th year.

From a poster on VQ:

"Milton is playing on TV tonight and they interviewed Treyvaun and his coach. They asked about his ACL injury and what it meant for his college future. Paulk said Butch told him they will do whatever they can do to help and he will 100% honor his scholly offer. The head coach said the UT staff handled the situation with class and he is really impressed that Butch will still honor his scholly."

Boom!!

Good to know. He is going through a lot of pain right now. Got to steel your mind for the tough road to recovery. Glad our coaches are sticking by him

This is how you build things. For the short term it might not seem like much but is huge for the long term.

That quote still makes it seem like a greyshirt is an option. honoring a scholarship can happen this year or next. at least that's how I read it. imo I think he's still worth the take this year. he was having a really good season up until the tear

Really. I didn't read it that way. If grey shirt was even mentioned I doubt the Milton coach would say really impressed. Maybe I'm misinterpreting

Best for both parties. CBJ isn't going to mess anything up between recruits. Some may very well not make it here, but this staff is the type of staff that helps players get chances at other schools aka Fugate and Lee not throw them under the bus. All is good on the Hill with CBJ at the helm. The man is a class act.

CBJ and staff are doing it the right way. Glad to hear they are going to roll with the kid. Parents and recruits you can bet will take notice.

You can bet that when he gets on campus he will be one of the athletes that will be a host for recruits while wearing his VFL tee-shirt and telling them what a great staff UT has and that they should commit to UT.

I'm not saying the idea of a greyshirt came up in conversation. I'm just saying that saying you will "honor a scholarship" is not the same as saying "you can be on the team next year." Technically every greyshirt that eventually ends up on the team has had their scholarship honored (unless they randomly decide to walk on for whatever reason). I would imagine this is something the staff will evaluate as the season and Paulk's recovery goes on.

That being said, obviously I really don't have any idea what Butch is thinking.

I highly highly doubt in the days leading up to paulk's commitment, that the word grayshirt was ever uttered to such a highly rated recruit with many offers. So if a coach and player indicate that a staff is honoring their end of the bargain, it would most likely be confirmation that a scholly would be held. For this year. If they had indicated the next year, some disappointing comments would have come from either Paulk or his hs coaches. Considering all the evidence I've seen, there is no way that grayshirt is on the table, otherwise I think we would have heard about it.

Additionally honoring a commitment and "not the same as saying you can be on the team this year" would be more than misleading. I've seen no evidence of that from this staff either, jabo lee notwithstanding cause I don't know all the facts in that case.

...again, I don't think any of our coaches ever said anything to Paulk about greyshirting, so I'm not sure why you keep bringing that up. Obviously if nothing was said to Paulk or his coach about greyshirting, then they wont have any disappointing comments to give.

Do I think Butch is going to greyshirt him? No. But I don't think saying "we will honor your scholarship" is hard evidence that he will be in this class, due to the fact that that scholarship could come at any time.

I am not saying there is "evidence" here that supports the notion of greyshirting. I am simply saying that there's not evidence here that says he wont.

I understand what you're saying, I just don't see it the way you do. If our coaches were leaving that option open to squeeze another player in, then that would be misleading and I see no evidence of that, not to mention the short term gain when considering the long term implications of not being able to sign any Milton players in the future. I'm not being adversarial so don't take it the wrong way bro. I just don't see any advantage to that course of action.

It's true that the comments on their face do not preclude a grayshirt. The comments do not include one either. Taken in its total context, honoring a scholly next December jan rather than this coming august seems incongruent with what our staff is preaching

This is very encouraging!!! I think this only reinforces what Butch is trying to sell to these recruits! Love it!! Paulk will never forget it and there is no doubt will give his all for this staff...

Butch is building for the future. He knows there is a chance Paulk may not play in '14 because of the injury, but he will hopefully have Hurd, Lane and maybe another RB, like one of the Berrys to carry the load. Since freshmen are mostly given time to develop, he takes Paulk, gives him time to heal and develop and then he has a good RB for 3 to 4 years. So, the best scenario is to honor the scholly and get a very good player for the future.
