'14 CA CB Adoree' Jackson (Signed with USC)

So true, but one correction. Bamer sucked well passed the late 90's. They were winning 3, 4, or 5 games a year till the mid 2000's. They didn't start winning again till 08. We won 7 straight on them! When they were down to 3 wins a year it was really bad and I loved it! I think it was 2003 and/or 2004. They were down for a long time, up and down for about 10 years.

Bama from 2000-2006 was 47-45. UT from 2006-2012 was 47-42. It's been bad for UT, no doubt, but people have completely forgotten how awful Bama was. They had 2 good seasons in that 7 year stretch and a whole lot of really bad ones.

Yep, and I think the 4 years prior to Saban getting there they were something like 11-25. Something like that and people were saying they could never recover. Twitter and Facebook weren't around back them so the noise isn't as loud as it is for us now. I think that's one thing that makes it seem worse than it really is for us, that and the fact that is US going through it. Point is, the elite always return, it's just a matter of getting the right coaches in place. The rest is already there.

I was listening to Colin Cowherd the day Saban took the job. Cowherd went on a 2 hour rant about how Alabama was a washed-up program in the middle of nowhere and would never be able to compete again with the likes of USC and Florida. Boy, did he whiff on that one! UT is miles ahead of where Alabama was when the wee little coach came to town.

Fans are short sighted by nature. When times are bad no one thinks it will ever be good again and when times are good no one thinks it can be bad.

Also I can remember when Alabama was ranked as a horrible job because of the shadow of Bryant. All the big time programs have gone thru the same thing. It was said about USC for years that they would never be back because they were in the wrong side of town and kids wanted out of that environment.

I remember that, I wanted him to be right but I knew better. Lol

That's a another great comparison. USC in the years immediately before Pete Carroll was hired had annual records very similar to ours in recent years. They also had a stretch where they were drubbed by UCLA for something like 9 or 10 years in a row and people thought that was no longer a rivalry.

I recall an article written not long after Butch was hired, comparing him to Pete Carroll. Supposedly, Carroll was USC's 4th pick for the job the year he was hired - their top 3 didn't want to leave what they had to take over a program with such a bad recent track record and "unrealistic" expectations. Carroll, on the other hand, jumped at the chance. Leaving aside the NCAA violations, Carroll knocked it out of the park and reestablished USC as a national brand.

Exciting times for us on Rocky Top. Butch is going to get us back into the elite, I'm confident.

One thing I would love to see is us actually competing with the majority of teams in the SEC. Maybe even win one we aren't supposed to. I think if him and Clifton Garrett see us actually fighting back against UF, UGA, USCe, Auburn, we will have the better chance of landing them

Do you, per chance, have a citation or link to the article comparing Pete Carroll's hiring to Butch's? I don't believe that I have seen that one and it certainly presents an intriguing premise.

Don't let UGA fans hear you say that.

I thought Martinez was a good position coach at UGA just didn't work out when he was promoted to calling plays? He won't be calling plays at UT, Jancek will. And Jancek's D finished 1st or 2nd in conference each year at Cincy under Jones, IIRC.

Which is insane for a hurry up team.

Yes he's a fantastic DB coach, one of the nations best IMO. UGA fans seem to forget he earned his DC job thru his excellent job as a DB coach.

As for Janceck, from what I could tell he was co-coordinator at UGA. I'd like to see some situations where that worked on a consistent basis. Seems like those co coordinator jobs are set up to fail.

Agreed... but tempered by the reality that they always got to play Pitt, Temple, Rutgers, and UConn.

They were actually last in the Big East in '10, 3rd in '11, and 2nd in '12 (scoring D). They were 7th, 6th, and 6th in total D.

Fumbles force: 5th, 1st, and 1st
INT's: 7th, 3rd, 2nd
Sacks: 7th, 1st, 2nd
TFL: 5th, 1st, 5th

Seems to be a focus on big plays and pressure more than I expected from what I have read.

This is correct. The stats back up the claim as well.

Coming back in on the Martinez discussion, which will help Adoree'. Thanks to many of y'all for having my back. Below are Rivals stats for 2003-2009. They do not post or have 2001 and 2002.

UGA
Total D Rank/Passing Yds/Interceptions

2003: #2/2213/17
2004: #13/2014/5
2005: #6/2085/16
2006: #22/1803/19
2007: #29/2462/15
2008: #65/2261/11
2009: #71/2410/10

So it is very clear to see that the co/DC caused the worsening of the D's performance. Kind of like having two QB's playing half the time. Doesn't work over the long haul. However the stats reflect good to very good secondary play. Martinez had to split his time starting around 2005 I think and probably had GA's helping. Removing schedule influence on the end numbers, even a novice can see that Martinez is an excellent secondary coach and if he equals this performance at UT we will be singing his praises hoping he gets large raises to retain him.
