'14 AL QB Kendrick Doss

Won't you have the same problem we're having this year? QBs see our depth chart and explore other options.

Much better chance to land a 2015 kid if we did not take one this year. Coaches could point to not taking one in 2014 as a reason for a 2015 kid to take advantage of it.

We missed out on the top prospects in the 2014 class. Let's not make the mistake of taking on just another body that takes up a scholarship just to say we have 5 QBs on scholarship a year from now.

Let's fill some needs and build quality depth in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Why stretch for just a decent QB in this class with all the other needs? Especially when you can redshirt one of our stud freshman and it's like he's apart of the 2014 class. It would help to land another stud in 2015 too

I'm not saying we should take some project QB.

I'm saying that there are others out there that we just haven't heard of yet. It happens every year during the summer. Just because we may not land a 4 or 5 star QB doesn't mean we can't find a good solid QB in this class. People on here take rankings way too seriously sometimes.

My main point I'm trying to make is that we just need to be patient and let the coaches find us some other targets at the position. Giving up on QB recruiting in June is silly and isn't the best way to go about it.
People who keep saying we should just focus on landing a stud QB next year need to realize there's no guarantee that will happen. What if next year we struck out with all our main targets?

I agree. No one knew who Nate Peterman was until around the season time/end of summer, IIRC.

Even Tyler Bray was a guy that came out of nowhere in the summer. He started camping at some schools, got a chance to compete in the elite 11 and did well, and then he falls right in our lap.

Bray was so frustrating! Cannon arm with loads of talent, but very immature with no self discipline.

Speaking of Bray, was it not Bray's class that wasn't very stocked at QB? I just remember either Kiffin's first class here or the one he was building upon leaving that didn't even have one 5* QB. The QB class as a whole was watered down that year. I'm not saying to take a QB or not. I'm one who thinks you take a QB and interior lineman EVERY single class if at all possible. But I also don't believe in taking a guy just so you have a QB. And I get this feeling that to some it's a forgone conclusion that we will bag some stud QB next year. But there's no guarantee of that.

As for Doss....this entire situation was weird IMO. Kid sounded as if he felt he was gonna get an offer prior to the camp. Makes me wonder at what level he competed. Again this is pure speculation on my part. But I'm wondering if he just went thru the motions "knowing" he had an offer coming. On the other hand our QB situation for this class is serious and the coaches wanted to see the best from these dudes, want them to compete and earn it. Again, pure speculation by me. Just seems so odd that there was so much "mutual interest" reported less than 24 hours before him leaving without an offer.

Did he camp? I thought maybe he just visited. When the poster said the staff just kind of ignored him, I did not think he was there to camp. Maybe if he did not compete, that aided in the staff backing off? The whole deal seems very odd to me. Why have a kid travel all the way to Knoxville and then ignore him? With the rumors out there that he was going to commit, the coaches had to know that was his plan.

Dobbs and Ferguson are 2nd tier qb's? Lmassoff

Don't we have 5 QBs? Worley, Peterman, Dobbs, Ferguson, and Charlie High? And if no one leaves I'm pretty sure we'll still have all 5 next year, if I'm wrong we'll still have 4 of them.

Now granted if someone transfers or someone gets suspended or so on and so on, yes it would be nice to look for another QB at that time.

But at our present state, QB depth is not an issue, 3 of those 5 being true freshman who can redshirt and learn more if needed, doubt it with the talent Dobbs and Ferguson have but I'm just sayin.

So if we're in the running for a top QB then great go get him, otherwise why not make better use of that scholly and get a player at a position of dire need, such as OL or DL, and build that depth back up while we can rather than pick up a 6th string QB?

I understand things happen and like I said by all means if we're in on a top QB then grab him, but with our current depth chart I just don't see all the desire to MUST sign a QB this class.

And you might be correct about him not camping. I'm not sure if he got involved or not. If he didn't then it very well could have hurt him. Dudes not a 5* stud top ten player. Not competing wouldn't be a wise choice IMO. Again, my post is filled with speculation I'm fully aware of that. But that's what happens when weird stuff happens. People start wondering, LOL. But I'm with you, an odd situation to say the least.

Good points and I tend to agree with you. After missing out on the top QBs, maybe even the staff has decided to pass on a QB now. That may help explain them paying no mind to Doss yesterday if what was reported was accurate. I am also pretty sure High agreed to the walk on spot with the understanding that a scholarship was a very good possibility in the future. If the staff could secure a top QB for the 2015 class soon, I would not hesitate to use the 2014 spot for a position of need.

All kinds of good in this here post.

Looking like no QB in this class. Best to offer a top 2015 QB telling him we won't take one this year. That would appeal to a lot of kids. Tyler Harris would still be an option IMO. As I said after we took Ferguson & Dobbs, landing another top QB this year was going to be tough.

This IMO. QB is not a "pressing" need this cycle IMO. If a top rated guy is available and you wanna take a run at him fine. Otherwise, lets take extra players in true need positions to build depth.

Yeah I remember that as well, but that's kind of why I brought it up. Everyone thought we weren't going to find a good QB in that class after Scroggins picked USC and everyone else had already committed elsewhere. Shortly after that, Bray's name pops up. So you just never know.

I'm certainly against taking a QB just to take one, but I do realize it's just June and we all need to just see what happens with it going forward. I couldn't agree more with your last statement.

Vols will likely add Dual Threat QB Kendrick Doss to the 2014 class this weekend. After watching his film...I'm sold.
