'14 AL DE Cory Thomas (Now the enemy)

Yea what depth chart is he looking at? Does he think the other schools have less lineman? Plus all of ours will be freshman and sophomores. Try to find that at another school.

I'd be upset if we lost Cory. Seems like a mad dog lineman with great size and potential to grow into his frame. Stick with us, CT!

What he expect us to replace 6 lineman with 3? We need as many as we can get to see he comes out on top to start or play major minutes and then redshirt the 1-3 guys that aren't ready yet.

5. Thomas was the best defensive lineman in both practice sessions. His superb play recognition allowed him to blow up several screen passes and he almost came up with an interception after deflecting one. In the run game, he penetrated his gap to meet the ball carrier in the backfield for several tackles for loss.

Hopefully, we can keep this cat on board. I don't know why he thinks he will find more favorable situations at Mississippi State or Clemson. Clemson has 17 defensive linemen returning, Mississippi State has 15 returning DL, and Tennessee has 12! Our number of 12 includes the likes of Carson and Folger (walk-on), too. It is an open and closed book as to who has the thinnest depth chart.

Other things come into play numbers wise. Just because a team has 17 DL guys returning may not come into play with this recruits thinking. What if 8 of those 17 will be gone after one year? It's one thing to go in thinking you may have to sit a year. It's another thing going in thinking you may have to sit 2-3 years if there are 8 other DL guys coming in with you in your class and the other 10 on campus are TFR and So's.

It's all a part of negative recruiting. Schools will always use this as a way to secure a visit and get a guy on campus. We all know anything can happen on campus. I know ours staff is also hammering home assurance as to how important he is to our class.

Negative recruiting wouldn't be effective if some of these players didn't have a weak mind set. If I'm a top recruit I don't want to go to a big time school on a visit and hear about why I shouldn't to go to X,Y, and Z. I want to hear why you want me to come to your school. Of course I know you don't want me to go to your competition, but if I'm unbiased, I'm open to all options. In other words, sale me on everything about this school and the benefits of coming here, instead of the bad effects I will have if I go to your competition. I hope Butch doesn't do this because it makes you look like a giant pansy. Great coaches sell their brand, and that don't worry about anyone else's brand because they know theirs is the best.

This kid and whoever is advising him has some serious issues if they are concerned about Tennessee's depth on the Dline. It's probably the best Dline situation in the entire SEC if not country among major programs if you want a chance at very early PT. Ridiculous.

Very true. I'd much rather come in with a large DL class and compete with kids my own age rather than come in and try and take an older kid's spot.

Some good points here, but I still would think if I'm a top DL recruit it would be a better situation to go to a place where I'm fighting for spots against people mostly in my class. We really only have a 1 deep at DT and DE. At the other schools they have more lineman and upperclassman, that will be harder competition to beat out. Plus while he's waiting at other schools they will continue to recruit his position.

Plus we can't be recruiting more than 2 or 3 more DL this year than those other schools.

Not buying Thomas is "afraid of competition". The better the comp the better the player (and his development).
Or that he may become a "numbers casualty". If he's a casualty of anything it will be academics, still needs to complete portions of the State Grad Exam to ensure eligibility.

From the start Thomas has been clear and upfront in that he would take both Jan OV's. His not wavering changes nothing.

I've been waiting for him to de-commit. Scout has always had him as a soft verbal.

Typical strange recruitment of an Alabama player, looks like a monster, nice offer list, film looks good, but rated a low 3-star. He was predicted to end up at MSU from the beginning and that'll likely hold true IMO (just reading between the lines).

Still hope he's a Vol though.

I agree 100%. He said the day he committed he was taking those 2 visits. I'll be surprised if he's not a Vol.

I have always wanted this guy as a part of our class. Always has been clear about the visits. This has bothered me because I want him to be a VOL.

However, depending on what the coaches told him even when he committed, I can understand keeping his options open. He has kept them open and it seems with the coaches blessing. We do have a numbers thing and he will have to be eligible with all grades.

Reading between the lines, he may not be 100% guaranteed a spot; therefore, keeping other options open as a backup to make sure he goes somewhere he wants to go.

I hope this is not the case because I have always liked him and want him a part of this class.

It just seems that it may mutual for him to also have a backup plan.

Very good post.

Also one other thing to Remember is if he goes to miss state in January it will be his second visit. He visited for the Bama game after committing to us
