Listen:
1) We lost a recruit. A guy who may or may not turn out to be worth a flip. We're all going crazy about him, most of us, because some sites gave him 4 stars instead of 2 or 3. Most of you on this board haven't even watched his film. And those that have aren't talent scouts or evaluators. I would say only about 2% of the people on this board have a actual clue as to how good this kid is.
2) What do you stinking expect? Butch has been on the job for two months now. 60 days. At least 14 days of those 60 was dead period. For some of that live and dead period, he was assembling a staff. But he can't work miracles! It's not like he's won a BCS championship, and his name is known worldwide! Shoot, 50% of people who are not Tennessee fans still think his name is Butch Davis! It's not like Tennessee has been featured in a good light on sports center, or has been a premier program lately. While we remember the Tennessee of the 90's, that's a far distant thought in many's mind, if they remember at all. To be a program that we'd like to think we are, we need to be like Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Auburn, Notre Dame, Ohio State, etc. The thing they all have in common is that more years than not, they have winning and successful seasons. We haven't. So why are you expecting to have Alabama results off the field when we haven't had results on the field? Facilities help, academics help, fans help, traditions help, but ultimately, no recruit goes to a place where they have no evidence that they're going to win. Tennessee has NOTHING to promise a player that we're going to win right now. We only have Butch's campaign at Cincy and Central Michigan. And if we as fans are skeptical, how much more will they as players be? Tennessee has been viewed as a underperforming program the past few years. Until that changes, and until we're on the upswing again (a winning season, where we beat someone we aren't supposed to), then good luck getting these awesome results you want. If we get Bell tomorrow, then consider us VERY lucky.
3) Butch Jones CAN coach. You don't win at Central Michigan and Cincinnati unless you can. It's not like the 5* recruits all flock to those schools. You take what you can get there, and what you can get is 1* and 2* and MAYBE the occasional 3*. If you can't coach in those leagues, you're going to be a bottom dweller. But Butch won in those league. We have a good amount of talent in our current roster, not counting this signing class. We have a Gatorade player of the year at QB, with previous starting experience, and we have two 4* running backs who have improved dramatically over the past two years. We have several WR's that are 4*, and that are physically intimidating, and promising. We have arguably the best OL in the country, with several NFL picks just waiting to happen. We have a decent defensive line that will only improve, going back to a 4-3. We have Maggitt and Johnson at LB, that have been like the LB's of UT olden days. And while our secondary lacked last year, it's not because we don't have talent. We have a good amount of talent, and experience.
We have talent on this team. We have just been poorly coached. LUCKILY, we have a coaching staff that has been together for many years, which is going to help the continuity and the implementation of this team, and it's also going to allow Butch to coach the areas that need the most help.
4) Tomorrow may or may not be pretty. We may or may not end up with a top 15, 20, or even 25 class. And that's okay for this year. No staff can promise a recruit that they're going to win at Tennessee, when a staff has not yet proven that they can win at Tennessee.
But step away from the ledge Vol fans. The ones who want to be Vols, we will welcome them to the Big Orange Family.
Those who don't want to be Vols....will VERY shortly wish they were.
