'13 TN ATH Jalen Ramsey (Former USCw, now FSU commit)

I agree its a business. Whether they like it or not, they are paid thousands of dollars a year in Tuition, Room and Board, Books, clothing, etc. to play football. They are also allowed in with lower grades and test scores. If you don't do your job you get fired. Same with these kids...

I agree with this generalization.

However, the flip side is these coaches are paid millions of dollars and are professionals. They should be able to properly evaluate a recruit and not punish a student athlete for not being as good as the next incoming recruit. The players are amatuers, and even when factoring in room and board, tuition, etc, they are still underpaid, especially at the big time programs.

Just my opinion. If Saban is the best in the business, one would think he wouldn't need as big of a recruiting cushion, or "do-overs" as he has been doing.

Two reasons for that:

1) It has been a while since Tennessee was relevant.

2) Tennessee is a long state. Knoxville is on the far East end. So, Kids in Southwest Tennessee are closer to other schools. Hightower lived an hour and a half from Tuscaloosa...

Actually it takes over 3 hours. And about 3 1/2 from Knoxville

I give you credit for getting an "A" in REC 301-Processing for Better Players

SPUAT is the most high-profile school guilty of oversigning players for four reasons: 1) because of the impassioned defense of the practice by the bammer fanbase; 2) because of the well-publicized number of shady transfers and team dismissals; 3) because of lil nicky's colorful reaction to inquiries regarding oversigning (namely, browbeating reporters into submission); and 4) because they've been the most successful school to do so.

Let's continue this another day and let the Vol folks get back to discussing the issues they came here to talk about, speficically VOL recruiting. Besides its almost time for you to turn on the Finebaum show.

I love AU fans always feel they are better than other fan bases and that they run the cleanest program in CFB. Pat Dye 101 you get an A in. AU is perfect, never a question about their recruitment techniques, players ever breaking the rules and Trooper is a saint. Again every program has it dark side the difference is most AU fans believe AU is perfect and that everyone is out to get them for no reason. Is does make you wonder every time one rumor comes out every news agency camps out in West GA since the current AU staff has arrived. Just saying.

BTW the most famous caller on the PF show is Tammy, an AU fan.:hi:

I think it has more to do with the recruit. Limited opportunity to see these players and actually work with them in camp before coming to campus. Why they request and receive so much film and in the end hope they sign a player that reaches their full potential. It is never 100% every player you sign will work out.

One of the main areas Saban gets hammered for regarding oversigning was his sign and place policy. He owould sign a player and if the player did not qualify he would help them find a JUCO, just like every other coach. Other conferences complained because he basically was placing players in JUCOs and if they panned out and passed classes they would come back to his program. Which btw Saban has one of the highest retention rates for placing players in JUCO and getting them back. Meaning most players that signed with Saban and went to JUCO made it back to UA. Other conferences could not do that and they did not like it. To me the SEC provided an opportunity that other conferences would not. They helped get these kids into college and qualify for a 4 yr school. The Big10 would not do that.

Part of oversigning is not processing players it was about signing place that would never qualify and placing them in JUCO. It all blew up when Ole Miss signed 38 and Nutt said most will not qualify and they would end up in JUCO.

TideWarrior, nothing personal, you seem like a good guy. Don't want to detract from Vol guys continuing discussion for AU-UA pissing contest. Fair enough?:salute:

You are a very solid poster with solid information. And it is ok to openly hate on Bama here. :)

Haha. Appreciate that. However, we are guests on your board and don't need to dominate discussions with our open dislike for each other, meaning bama and Auburn. Besides, TideWarrior, aside from his biased AU rhetoric brings good info to the board.:hi:

What does that have to do with anything? Coaches are paid the big bucks and they are the ones handing out the scholarships. In the end, it is their responsibility.

The issue I have with how Bama (and other schools) recruit, is that it isn't about the recruit as much as it is about finding loopholes and bending the rules. All this business about Saban saying "is his really what we want college football to be about" with regards to hurry up offenses comes across as absolutely comical when compared against the cold hard facts on how he runs his recruiting program. You will defend him to the end, no doubt. I just think the hypocrisy is laughable, at best.

College football is a business. Saban is a mercenary. It is what it is. Good for him. But you really can't sit there and defend what Saban does with regards to recruiting and keep a straight face, or expect the rest of us too.

Bottom line is Tennessee needs to do a better job of in state recruiting. Tennessee has few top/elite prospects and it is not realistic to land them all, but every year about 60-70% of those guys will sign elsewhere. That needs to change! There are barriers with the mindset of Memphis players, no doubt, but that is no excuse. If Tennessee wants to return to winning ways this is the first step. The vols should not have RB or secondary problems because there have been several top guys come through TN that are now at other SEC powers. I think the VOLS are primed for a comeback to the top, but it needs to start in TN. It is too late for 2013, hopefully the perception can change soon.

What am I defending. Saban recruits players to play football. They either succeed or they do not. He gets paid millions of dollars to win. How much more simple is it than that. They have one responsibility and that is to win games nothing more.

If you think different go tell all your posters in the football thread that none of them should be upset because Dooley is making these players better students and that winning has no importance. See if they care about anything else other than winning. If not CDD would never be on the hotseat. When you post please link for I can enjoy the read.

I love all the people that claim foul but yet how many on here praised Kiffin when he was at UT doing things that people get upset for with Saban. That is what the true hypocrisy is and if Saban was at UT doing the same thing he would be praised for it in Knoxville and by every fan.

:peace2:

I do not take it personal. I grew up without the hatred for my neighbor because of what color they sported next door. I understand the passion in the state of AL. But not being from there I love the sport not hate the fans. Just find it funny sometimes thats all. :salute:

So are TW and SCtiger cluttering up EVERY recruit thread on this board with there incessant bickering??

Ironically, individually they both seem to be decent posters. Put them together and the threads turn to garbage.

Cut it out guys??

Sadly, nothing of interest is going to happen in this thread. I really hate that we couldn't catch Ramsey's eye. We could really use him. He could start this weekend for us.

I can't give it up tho. I'll be waiting to hear about a flip till signing day dammit.

It could happen. There's no reason to give up on it 100%.

This we can clearly agree on.

Ramsey, Green, Lawson are the three I would like to see most in this class, in that order. IMO, our three weakest positions and three immediate game changing players to fill them.

Had a good gm (1 INT) in the 20-0 loss to Ensworth.

Ensworth's Corn Elder (40/296/1 (fumble lost) & 2 TD's & created a fumble on "D") was a machine and Rico Mcgraw (1 INT) played well too.

Attended the game last night and Ramsey is an absolute MONSTER! One of the best athletes out there. He was all over the field. Wish he was coming to us! Side note: he looked really frustrated with his qb. Can't say I wouldn't be tho.

Yeah, what I saw of the game (only part of the first half), Staver looked terrible throwing the ball...glad he is going to Florida and not UT.
