'13 OH TE A.J. Branisel (UT signee)

Very nice pickup this guy will fit in nicely in Knoxville. Much rather have a 3 star with good upside like Branisel then a 4 star that never plays like Cam Clear.

It will be interesting to see where Justin King winds up. He looked surprisingly good running the option but I will be surprised if he isn't moved to TE or LB. Thoughts?

I am amazed at the people who can simply look at an offer sheet and make better determinations than our entire coaching staff. That's talent.

If Justin King amounts to anything more than a 3rd teamer I will be thoroughly surprised.

Seems like he would make a very good wide receiver. Why does he have to be a tight end in college at his current size? Would love to see him get an early look at wide receiver at UT.

This is a terrible train of thinking. Cam Clear played a lot, and he was only here for his freshman year. He was 6'6" 270 TE. He was a blocking TE, but he was still very athletic. AJ Branisel is awesome, watch his film and you will see. This is a good pick up. The kid has great size and speed.

Bad move if we cut Chauntez Loose.

he is a Big athlete who can block, catch, shed blocks and rush the passer.

I certainly have no real expertise about evaluating these guys but my initial impression was that jones favored the athletic TE that could play standing up over the power 3pt stance style guy. I know this has been discussed at length but if this commitment means Jackson has been passed over then my initial impression must have been spot on.

King saw the field last year and has excellent athleticism. Id like to see him get a shot at lb. He's also a bright kid so he may be a contributor down the road.

You mean the guy who points out that SEC schools had no interest in him and he was committed to a 2nd tier program?

Yep, I'm that guy.

This coach understands how to use TE's better than most... question just about any other position other than TE... Cinnci has used the TE and knows quality.

hey, he could become a work out warrior and make moves, I just have to see it to believe it

Why do you say that? He looks to be a very good athlete. Not saying your wrong but what are you basing it on?

or we lost Jackson ...

but actually this doesnt prove a thing. Most TEs come to college around 225.

they round out into shape as the years go. Tyler Eifert from ND is the best TE prospect this year. he came to college at 220. he is now 260. he played TE in HS, he knew how to block on the end of the line. he was always physical

Travis Kelce (from Cinci) came to College as 6'5 230...

get what Im saying.

Playing TE is about physicality at every level. always has been always will be.

U put guys from WR to TE and they arent as effective and actually a detriment in the run game.

Probably gonna need a redshirt. Will be interesting to see what this means about vandenburg and quinn

he isnt sudden.

I havent seen him with a burst.

a poster said "he saw the field"

ok, doing what? you see how quickly we scrapped that garbage option he was runnning.

Not downing the guy, because he is young. He has a lot of growing to do, but where is this potential you guys see?

IMO he is a man without a position.

Think he moves to OLB if we land one of the JUCO TEs maybe even if we don't

Looks like a good player at a position of need(TE). I like the 4.5 40 at 225+ pounds. Would lead me to think he could line up out wide as well in some sets or in the slot to try and get a mismatch with the defense. CBJ and staff are doing a great job of trying to finish this recruiting class strong.

I don't think we really disagree on anything other than the fact that I don't think playing WR means a player can't develop the physical style we both agree is important. As long as the body frame can put on extra weight those big WR(croom) can do just that IMO.

I think you need to read my post again. I said Brainsel was a very good pickup with good upside. I always thought Cam Clear was overrated. Yes he has talent but he is soft and lazy. He didn't play "alot" as you say before getting kicked off the team and if we had any depth at all he wouldn't have seen the field. I would take a kid like Brainsel over Cam Clear every time. Of course hindsight is 20/20.
