'13 KY DE Jason Hatcher (USCw Commit)

Hatcher called our coaches today informing them that he is committing to USC for now. I found the last part very interesting.

I wish our coaches would put the pressure on him for a change and tell him that his spot may not be there later on if he wants to flip. We aren't playing 2nd fiddle to USC. I wonder if there are any chances that Redd does transfer and Kiffin tells Hatcher that they no longer have a spot for him?

Beyond the fact that USC doesnt match UTs vet program or proximity I think it makes a lot of sense for Hatcher to commit to USC for now. He has to get his spot while the spots there for the getting in case UT tanks this season or fires Dooley. If UT succeeds or USC implodes he switches his commitment to UT in December or early January.

I actually felt a little better about Hatcher after reading the story that is up on TOS.

I do think we have several strong arguments in our favor though:

1) Mom -- she obviously would rather have him closer to home like any mother would. I think Jason would prefer that also -- he would be closer to his family and his family and friends could come see him play. Also he could go home from time to time to see his friends and get some home cookin'.

2) I honestly believe that Hatcher is a good solid kid who has his values in order and his head screwed on straight. He would fit in better and be more comfortable in Knoxville than in LA. We have our loonies, but comparatively speaking, they look like Einstein's compared to the left coast.

3) We have both the pre-Vet curriculum and the School of Veterinary Medicine -- the pre-vet program is specifically designed to prepare him for Vet school. He could get a general science degree at USC, but it would not be tailored to get him ready for Vet school.

4) The cost of living is much higher in LA than Knoxville, and he would statistically have a significantly better chance of survival in Knoxville than in LA.

5) Hatcher size, build, and skill set is much better suited to play LB (probably Jack) in a 3-4 scheme than as a DE in a 4-3 scheme. Jason is too slow, too short, and not big enough to play DE in USC's 4-3.

Since Kiffin and Ogre have firmly planted in Jason's mind that Dooley will be fired this year, we may not get him Friday, but a good season of winning on the field will put that idea to rest and I think we can flip him by NSD.

So Hatcher is too slow to play DE, but he'll be fast enough to play 3-4 OLB? 3-4 OLBs need to be faster than a 4-3 DE.

By the way, posting a sub 4.7 40 time (electronic) as a HS junior is pretty damn fast. More than fast enough for DE or even LB.

Also, he's not "too short" or "not big enough". There are tons of successful rush DEs that play in the 6'2" 240+ lb range. That's what Hatcher will likely end up being in his RS Sophomore year.

jason is waiting for UT to win games. if we start performing like some of us have proposed, then he will flip.

Not really sure what he meant... but he is better suited for a 3-4 OLB.... his shuttle time was honestly insane for a kid his size... 4* wr's and db's don't post shuttle times like he did...

I agree that he might be better suited for 3-4 OLB, but in the past USC has used players in a very similar fashion to a 3-4 OLB. Hatcher could fit that role well... and if he gets to 240+ lbs, he'll be able to play DE just fine.

With his 40 time and his shuttle, his lack of height may not matter.

Carroll was legit at running the 4-3 under/over... which is just like an OLB in a 3-4... you are right...

but I don't think Monte does anything like that... do you know?

I know that hatcher is a Jlb and not a 3-4 end but does the phillips pick up help with this hear.

I've heard that the idea is being tossed around for this upcoming year, but we really don't have a 240+ lb fast/agile guy to play that spot.

All of our DEs are too much of a DE to play there, and our starting OLBs are too small.

Jabari Ruffin, an incoming freshman OLB with the size/speed necessary may play there eventually... but I can't expect that as a freshman.

I like this point. Hopefully we succeed and he is a Vol come NSD :)

Yea, let's all go ahead and realize this vet school thing is a unlikey for a D1 football player--i.e. you could prob file it next to Dr. Eric Berry, DDS office. And that has NOTHING to do with a kids background.

It's just a fact out of the 100 kids who go down the pre-medical/dentistry/vet/pharm route--that includes 16-30 units of organic chem/physics/calculus-- maybe 10-15 will be offered admission to a program. Out of that 10-15, maybe 8-12 will complete all (4) years; then comes the opening an office after a vet residency.

Ask any parent of a current football player what the term "student-athlete" means to them and most will smirk, indicating these guys spend 50+ hours or more in the football complex. Even Craig Krenzel with his near 4.0 in Molecular Genetics undergrad never made it to med school..and he won OSU their first natty in 40 years.

However, I'm in a win-win situation if it's down to USC or UT :dance2:

On NSD he will not sign with USC. He will stay closer to home. He will sign with either TENN or UL. His mom is going to have a LOT of say in this which will play in UT's favor.
