As Tennessee looks closely at the junior college ranks for immediate help one name at tight end the Vols have set their sights on is College of the Desert tight end Brandon Vandenburg.
The 6-foot-6, 260-pound athlete was visited by Tennessee tight ends coach Mark Elder last week and is interested in what the Vols are saying right now.
"It was pretty good. We had been communicating over the phone. I've been communicating a lot with coach Bajakian when he was recruiting me to Cincinnati and now just keeping the process going and since they've got to Tennessee I've got a lot more interested," Vandernburg said. "I'd say it's definitely in the top five and I'm going to go take a visit and I'm excited to see what they're all about."
Vandenburg is scheduled to visit Tennessee in January and already has visits set up for Nebraska (Jan. 11,) Vanderbilt (Jan. 18) and Arizona State (Jan. 25) but said he's looking for a date to visit Tennessee.
"It was supposed to be on Jan. 4 but they don't really have any students there then so we're working on getting that moved to maybe the first of February," Vandenburg said. "I know I'm going to go on a visit but the date isn't really set in stone, yet."
Vandenburg's interest in Tennessee stems from the way Butch Jones and his staff utilizes the tight end position.
"I like their use of tight ends and I like their need at the position and their new coaching staff. I definitely like them and what they did at Cincinnati," Vandenburg offered. "I got a chance to see one of their games and I liked what I saw. When they played UConn I liked what I saw. Just, all the tradition and that type of stuff that Tennessee football has. That intrigues me a little bit."
Vandenburg was able to talk to Jones on the phone while he was at Cincinnati and said he likes his enthusiasm and hopes to get to know him more.
"I talked to him at Cincinnati. I'll probably get on the phone with him this next week or something," Vandenburg said. "He seems like a good guy, enthusiastic about football."
When Elder visited with him before the dead period ended, Vandenburg said they talked a lot about how he'd be used if he were to become a Vol.
"We spoke a lot about their situation and where they're coming from and how I fit into that picture. We talked about football and that type of stuff," Vandenburg said.
