'13 GA QB Johnathan McCrary

"Quarterback Johnathan McCrary (Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove) committed to Vanderbilt Thursday over offers like Alabama, FSU, Ohio State and Texas, giving the second year coach a headliner for next year's class. McCrary is a member of the ESPNU 150 Watch List."

That's really the kinda typical espn quote that I can't stand. Offers like Alabama, FSU, Ohio state, Texas!!!

Apparently an offer from UT is nbd

I agree that most of the time ESPN has no clue, but in this case that was the top 4 he named last week. But he also said he wanted to be the QB in the class at whatever school he went to and each of those schools are chasing more than 1 QB andf it appears all 4 may try and sign 2.

So he commits because he is scared of competition and wanted to be the only QB in the recruiting class? Don't want that kind of mentality. Hope he enjoys playing in front of 30,000 golf clapping Vandy fans in Clay Travis Memorial Stadium.

If Dooley gets the can and we bring in a decent coach, we could still pull him away.

The only hard sell UT has right now is (paraphrasing) "We're really young and have lots of gaps to fill so you could play sooner rather than later."

It's going to be very tough to pull in any really big recruits ESPECIALLY a QB recruit like this who is pretty much guaranteed to have a coaching change sometime in their collegiate career.

Hate to see Vandy picking these kids up, but.... Until Doolander is gone, it's going to happen more rather than less.

This might be one of the more ignorant things I have read on here in a while. What do you think would happen to this team/fan base/coaching staff if we lost another head coach right now? That would be the worst thing we could do right now. We would lose so many current and future players, staff members, and be looked at as an even bigger joke than we are now. Because of your idiocy, welcome to the ignore list my friend.

Back to the topic at hand, growing up in Nashville Vandy had always been that likable loser (like the Cubs). But as soon as Lane Kiff-, sorry James Franklin got there I cannot stand them. He talks so highly of class and yet allows his players to run out on to the field during the middle of our bands half time show. He actually did it himself. I hope we hang a big 50 spot on them this year.

Color me homer but I think Alexander sticks.. especially when he see that new facility.

Unless.. the Florida schools break out the straight cash homey

Heard Muschamp offered him the leather jacket from the coaches photo. It will be hard to compete with that.

Can't wait to see eventual illegal recruiting allegations against Franklin. Vandy is a joke. He has to be doing something shady. No way any good recruits look at Vandy unless getting something extra

You act as if Vandy has something to sell other than early playing time and light competition for starting spots. You could argue superior academics, but that hasn't and won't get them to the top of the SEC.

If you think that Vandy can use the coaching stability pitch more effectively than UT, you're just not thinking this through.

With UT, if Dooley fails he will be replaced, but if he succeeds he will be locked up long-term. Before our recent turmoil, we did have only 2 head coaches over a period of more than 30 years.

With Vandy, if Franklin fails he will be replaced. If he succeeds, he will be hired away by a school with a larger budget, better facilities, and a better stadium. Franklin isn't the type to pass up a chance at a top 25 all-time program to stay at Vandy. Vandy just isn't going to spend the money to pay a top-flight salary, hire high level assistants, and/or upgrade facilities to a level that will be competitive in the SEC.

Commitment more likely to stick: McCrary to Vandy or Alexander to UT?

I think if Franklin does not go after any more QBs for the 2013 class McCray will stick. With Alexander telling the guys on Scout that he wanted his status changed to "soft verbal" already, I think points to him being wide open and obviously looking around. This is what is different about alot of our recruits we land early. Other schools top recruits are out recruiting for their school. Ours are shopping themselves around looking for somewhere else to go.

HUGE pickup for Vandy here. :)

Did Tennessee recruit this kid and do you guys have a shot at flipping him?

Doesnt seem like the number 1 qb on our board from what I've read, but someone else may know more. Haven't seen mccrary's film but he could fit in their system

I agree with you concerning Alexander; however, to be completely fair, our current 2013 commits (not named Alexander) are really pushing for us from what I've heard. Seems like I read elsewhere that when they were all up here in January that Carr, Sanders, and Patrick were talking with guys about keeping the talent in the state. Maybe we happen to have a few more commits like Alexander (in terms of shopping around) than programs like Alabama at the moment, but once we start winning this season (and we will), look for that to change.

the bottom line for mccrary is he didn't want to be with another qb in the same recruiting class and vandy promised him that and i think he sticks.

A lot of schools don't get two qbs a class though. Not to mention Vandy wasn't even in the top 4 on Wednesday. It seems like Mccrary committed to prove a point to other schools that he won't go to any school that is recruiting two qbs so if they want him, he better be the only qb.

I think it sticks, plus I think the other schools he listed did not have him as high on their list as he had them. Apparantly our new OC did not have ranked as high as our old one did. But either way this is a huge pickup for Vandy.

247 has Vandy at 22 with only 1 commit. Franklin is proven he can recruit and he will use that to sell to other recruits. Plus McCrary will recruit hard for Vandy.

Vandy will only take one QB a year since we have 5 already on campus. We use the "you are the only QB in the class" every year. We used it to Gunner Kiel and then Patton Robinette(when Kiel fell through) so its not like this is only to him.
