'13 GA DE Carl Lawson (Auburn commit)

That's not what's happening. It's interesting to see folks that can't separate the discussion from "yay, racism!" to, "This having happened, and the potential of a recruit not wanting to be around the damndable relations that racism can cause, I wonder if he will want to come to UT, which is promising a family-centric, non-racist environment."

See the difference?
I love you no homo.

Been trying to say this over and over and over again.

I have no issue at all with our wanting him solidifying UT at the top. I take umbrage with our giddiness over the incident being described here. I don't really care why he ends up a Vol, but that tone struck me as sad as all hell.

i understand what you are saying.

Right, Orange, but that is somewhat simplified. The problem is not *just* in the thought that people may be celebrating racism. Rather, the idea is that it is in bad taste to celebrate the possible positive side effects of racism to your football team. It just seems to be in bad taste.

I am not saying that experiencing racism and being shot are equivalent (or that they are not equivalent), but it would be in bad form to have a message board getting super excited over a recruit having watched a guy get shot because that might make him think less of the team where it took place.

The idea is that something disgusting happened, and it is probably not the first, and probably won't be the last, time that it has happened to Rueben. And we should probably not jump immediately to Mr. Burns-ing it over the prospects of swinging Lawson. :)

Also, I want to edit this and say (without wasting an extra post) that I didn't mean to be singling out BPV when I made the 'bickering' comment. It was meant to be a general admonishment.

Not much. All we know is a fight broke out over there. :birgits_giggle:

The real question is did CL or family see the altercation. If so, is that what he and the UT coaches chatting about today? Even though the situation is horrible, I hope it helps CL pick UT over AU.

I understand your point of view. And I respect it. I am sure that any educated, rational person on this board agrees that racism is detestable, and we wish it didn't exist in the world.

But it happened. There are questions as to how this may or may not effect UT football recruiting. This is a UT football recruiting forum. The discussion neither condones, nor promotes racist behavior as far as I can tell.

Has our world become so PC that we can't discuss things that have happened and their potential repercussions?

If the CIO of my company is shot, is it bad form to wonder who will take his place? It effects my work stability.

Anyway. I understand and respect your point of view. It could become a slippery slope.

When people start using terms like "excited" or "giddy" it easy to be lead in the direction that they are glad the a young white man called a young black man a racial slur in 2013 during black history month.

I just think people should think before they put something out there. I have no problem with the way you phrased it. But reading something to the effect of "this is exactly what we needed!" Is a little disconcerting. I'm not normally a very PC person and I agree this can impact carl's decision but it could be discussed in a slightly more respectful manner. I can't even imagine how that made foster feel if this actually happened. Or anyone who may have heard it go down. Here is a kid who is on top of the world at his age and he probably was made to feel about 2 inches tall. And here we are trivializing it BC we want Lawson to sign with us so we hope he heard.

Lawson could go to Auburn and realize it's not the Auburn he knew under the former regime. In addition, if Garner says any of the wrong things or the Lawsons don't like the way things go, he's a Vol. Lawson's last visit was to UT and he was very impressed. If Auburn doesn't exceed the UT visit, he's a Vol.

I sure hope this is accurate. I'm the most excited I've been about signing day in a long time.

I was so defeated/resigned when Butch was announced...then came the press conference and yes I'm easy...I brightened...but can he recruit?...epic reach out to VFLs...awesome warm feeling...but can he recruit?...as I'm wondering this he's three steps ahead..talking to current commits and setting up feelers for more targets...dead period he's working the state and community..dead period ends he's on the attack...I'm out of questions...if we finish second on too many current targets I'm unswayed...we're in good hands...stop fretting and get in cheer shape..he's got the rest!

Those are points well made. I guess I must have missed the posts that said they were giddy about it. Those folks may want to rephrase things, since it could be construed in ways that I am sure they didn't intend.

He said he was giddy about the possibility of Carl coming to UT. People take things out of context...

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. And it wouldn't necessarily show any moral failings in your for you to have that thought at some point. The concern with it being your first thought, and with you becoming ecstatic over the possibility.

Of course, the real worry is that somebody would see your public display of excitement, and then take that to be your diminishing the severity of the suffering of your CIO.

I'm glad we're on (roughly) the same page anyway! This thing seems to have been a pretty big misunderstanding that was exacerbated by end-of-recruiting-season tension!
