Haha the Plainsmen? I hadn't heard of that before. Granted, I wasn't alive in the 60s. I wonder why they dropped that, but not the Tigers? It's stuff like this that makes me proud to be a Tennessee Volunteer. It's rooted in more tradition than just some animal.

Going off of memory here but I think the story goes an eagle saved after a battle during the Civil War by the only survivor on the Confederate side. Solider later became a professor at Auburn and brought the eagle to the campus with him for school events. During the first ever football game against Georgia, AU is losing early, the eagle gets loose from the owner and circles the stadium for the rest of the game, which AU comes back to win. At the end of the game, the eagle dies and falls on the field.

Seems plausible.

Interesting story. Kinda neat if true. I guess that's where the 'War' in 'War Damn Eagle' came from.

It's odd to me that Auburn's double mascots are so confusing to everyone but Alabama is the crimson tide and has an elephant as a mascot and no one cares.

As has been previously mentioned, the entire state is insane.

I their defense, they also wear Tide Detergent boxes on their heads... They are probably smoking that stuff too...

I have an issue with anyone who goes out in public with toilet paper and a box. They must not have bathrooms in that state.

TP to wipe and a box to put it in.

It just came to me why they would have an elephant as their mascot.. TUSCaloosa.. Or TUSKaloosa.. As in elephant tusk? Idk, only thing I could think of..

Unfortunately growing up in a family with members of my extended family on both sides of the UA/AU divide, I've heard the (supposed) origin of that one too. I must say though that Auburn's War Eagle story is way more creative.

Supposedly a newspaper writer was on the field before a game back in the 30's or 40's and heard a student yell out of the crowd "move your horses, the elephants are coming" as Bama was running out onto the field. Like most stories, there are probably different versions that exist but I remember that one being in some book my grandfather had.

You guys realize that we're the Volunteers and we have a blue tick hound dog as a mascot right? It's not that uncommon to have 2 mascots.

haha ive heard the writer say the players running through the tunnel sounded like a "herd of elephants" running onto the field

Our mascots and go hand in hand.

Auburn's tiger and War eagle do not nor do Bama's Tide and Elephant.

Not to mention that Smoky is in keeping with the rural, woodsman association of the Volunteer. Yes, Volunteers and Smoky go hand-in-hand.

That is correct; however, Tennesseans were key in the Texas Revolution. That's why a lot of posters give Texas hell on here - that, and the fact the UT is the first UT.

We are the Volunteers because we are the Volunteer State. Tennessee has a long history of volunteering for military duties. They also acquitted themselves well. In most every case.
