'13 FL LB Dominic Zanca (Duke commit)

Gotta say,,,I was not overly impressed by his Jr film. The kid just did not stand out. He made some good tackles, arm tackles, great contain, showed good speed off the ball, but just didn't appear to have the slobber factor. OTOH, if Coach Dooley & Co. made an offer, they must see something in the kid. His 40 time is slow but he appeared plenty quick to be around the ball.

No slobber factor? The kid knocked the slobber out of a blocker coming head on, around the 55 second mark, then tackled the runner pdq. And one of his offensive blocks totally took somebody out with a boom.

If we took those 3+1 added to Verren and Zanca that we already have and the would have UT taking 6 LBs in 2013. I was told that that wasn't going to happen.

I doubt that it will happen but I wouldn't mind getting 6 LBs in this class.

It's normal to recruit far more players than you have spots because you won't get a "yes" from everybody. I'm going the 4 LB route, but there's no way Tennessee says "no" if all of them want to come in. And, as is obvious, I have no idea what their board looks like or what they are trying to do.

And to be as diplomatic as possible, the only thing that Santos and Zanca have in common is being linebackers that committed to Tennessee.

that and they both are physical at the point of attack and both excel in attacking, disengaging, and defeating interior lineman

This commitment reminds me of why I try to avoid the football forum. I have never seen so many people b1tching about a player that they know nothing about besides the amount of stars he has on rivals

In fairness, this guy has no other offers. That's reason for concern, but it might also be reason to praise our coaches if he turns out to be a good LB. Hopefully the latter, but I'm always worried when a player literally has no other offers.

He played DL last year. That's more the reason for his lack of offers.

I'm sure you're correct to an extent, but if he was blatantly amazing, he'd have more offers. That doesn't mean he won't turn out to be stellar, but I can understand if some people (those of us who can't evaluate talent on our own) are wondering why UT is the only one interested so far.

Not a lot of kids are blatantly amazing, in fact very very few are. Coaches don't like to offer kids until they camp so they can get a better look at them. Schools haven't seen Zanca at linebacker since his sophomore year.

Fair enough. I'm excited to see how many others offer him before NSD.

Couldn't agree more.

I'll have to admit that I was down on him until I watched his game film from his JR year. I gotta say the kid has no quit in him for him. For him to only be in the 230 lb range he did very well shedding off blocks and getting to the ball against bigger OL. He is a team player and works where he's needed to help the team out.

I think this is a very solid pick up at LB, he already has good size to be a ILB. His offer list will grow during the summer & his Sr. season. Just not enought film of him playing LB yet.

If that 40 time is correct I don't see him being any help. He basically ran the same time as a 300 lb lineman while only weighing 200 lbs. His other measurables weren't good either.

I would say either those stats are wrong or this guy is a placeholder until we find someone better because I have never seen a linebacker that slow contribute at this level. Maybe they see him growing into a lineman... but that is a lot of growing.

This is the one thing people always forget. Running a 40 does not equate your game speed. He could run a 4.5 but run a 5.2 in pads. He could also run a 4.8 and run a 4.9 in pads. You never know the game speed unless you see it. It's too tricky IMO. If you see him fly to the ball then he should be fine.

I agree with you there is the (small) chance this is a placeholder pick we might ask to decommit later in the process, if we find some else.

But I really have trouble believing Sal Sunseri would pick a guy, even a placeholder, if he didn't think he could coach them into a quality contributor.

I think in order to demonstrate this guy is not a quality pick, you both have to dissect this guy's ability (per his film) AND explain to the forum why Sal Sunseri is unqualified to make judgments about a linebacker's ability to help our team. On this second point, it might be helpful to look into Sal's resume and background with linebackers and explain to the forum the weaknesses in that resume.

I anxiously await that second analysis from anyone who is negative on this pick. I actually would find it helpful. I come to this forum to learn more about my team, first and foremost, so I'd be interested for someone to tell me more about Sal Sunseri's ability (or inability) to evaluate linebacker talent.
