'13 FL DE/OLB Malik Brown (TN commit)

So much for 205lbs! DE, indeed.

They seem to have worded it in a positive way at least. We have 8-9 spots left. We have had a list of more than 8-9 kids they are trying to land. They have been chasing these kids for quite a while. An offer this late HAS to mean we do not feel good about someone. JMO

Or it's just the staff knowing it's highly unlikely they go 9 for 9 with those top 9 guys on their board and a guy like Malik Brown would be a great replacement for one of those they miss on. Better than coming up short like Dooley did last year and only getting 22 on NSD when a couple guys flipped. JMO.

Yeah it definitely sounds like they are trying to make sure they have backup plans for their remaining spots.

Hubbs specifically said that it looks like Tennessee will not reach a maximum class of 27 this year. Therefore, this offer just indicates the staff liking a kid enough to offer him a spot on the defense.

I like this offer, lets pick up some nice depth for the future. GBO!!!!!

Good call. In looking at it, it makes sense. I had forgot that with us being at 18 commits right now, we could very well lose Sutton, Skipper, and or Sanders. All a sudden we are looking to fill 12 spots instead of 9. Hope it all plays out well for us for a change. Lord knows Tennessee could do for something going our way for a change.

With 5 EE's and under signing this year, would it be a stretch to say that we can take around 30 for the 2014 class?

Honestly, I'd rather they hold the spots for next year. The '14 class is a bigger priority with all the buzz we're creating. Not to mention it gives extra space for prospects, specifically all our legacy players.

Since it seems we are destined to sign less than 27 what happens with swafford?

Count him against this years number or next??

IMO this year is the play but admitted don't fully understand the number rules.

"They offered me a grayshirt and said that there could be an opportunity where they have an open scholarship come August, and if not then I'll enroll in January 2014 and be on full scholarship from there," said Swafford, who emphasized to his prep coaches and during the interview his gratitude and intent to make the most of this opportunity. "I'm going to go in August and if I do good, I'm going to start when everybody else starts and if I do well in practice, then I can have a really good opportunity."

His statement saying he might have a scholly this year has stuck with me. That's why I am asking. My interpretation of that is that if the class doesn't get to 27 he gets a scholly this year. Anybody else feel the same??

Yes. If there's room I'm betting that Butch puts him on scholarship this fall.

This has probably been discussed but is Carr a DT. He seems to have the body type of a William Golston from Mich State which is why I see him as a DE but we don't seem to be going after many DTs when I think we need at least one

Coach Jones, Jancek, Stripling and Thigpen were all in to see Malik tonight. He's still deciding where he wants to visit next weekend but Tennessee made a strong impression. West Virginia's head coach is supposed to be in this week. NC State is also in consideration for the last visit. He hopes to know by Tuesday or Wednesday.

I will say, I don't see how CBJ isn't successful recruiting when given a full year to build relationships. Dooley left him with a bad class and I think he's doing everything he can. Can't say he didn't try hard enough this time.

If we get this kid him and Lewis and Vereen and Kenny Bynum will all be solid players for us in the future.

"It was nice. It was coach Jones, the defensive coordinator and a couple other members of the staff came up. It was good," Brown said. "They told me they flew down on their private jet to come see me. It was very important."

"We talked about all the facilities and all they have to offer education-wise and they told me I have a good chance to play early at Tennessee," Brown offered.

For Brown, Jones bringing in almost his whole defensive staff was impressive and left him knowing how interested the Vols were in him.

"What impressed me was how many coaches he brought down and their interest in me now," Brown said.

Plans to discuss where he's visiting (UT, NCSU, or WVU) with his coach over the next few days. Seems to me like wherever he goes this weekend is where he'll commit.
