'13 DT AL Rod Crayton

I hope we look at him again too but I could see why they wouldn't....he seems to get stood up or pushed back quite a bit in his highlights and at 6-1 and 300lbs, benching 500+lbs already....how much room for growth is there other than technique?

Which is why he's a take. Physically Crayton is there. Let Stripling get ahold of him and work on technique, and he could have a good career at UT. Besides he's a good kid that may have a chip on his shoulder when it comes to Alabama. Win-win IMO.

Oh dont get me wrong...he's a take for sure IMO does nothing but make our DL better IMO but there's more limited growth for him as a player as opposed to a guy 6-4, 270 who benches 300 lbs.

I would rather have Crayton throwing 500lbs than a kid who has a lot of work to do in the weight room. A big kid who is barely pushing 3bills may not see the field until his senior year. As where with Crayton, a year of learning how to get low and use leverage and the sky is the limit.

Hope we get him and hope you are right...definitely one I'm rooting for, seems like a great kid.

Is it just me or is Defensive Line a legit concern moving forward? Not only this coming up year, but in the next 2-3 years? The talent that we have on the Defensive line is highly suspect in my opinion.

Phillips, Taylor, Sentimore, Clark, Saulsberry, Carson, O’Brien, Walls, Couch, McCullers, Hood, and Carr are all possibilities at DT. And more than a couple of those guys are flight risks. I don’t think they make some moves until the players are either enrolled or not. Then you’ll see some more action for guys like Crayton and Bryant.

Taylor and Phillips are off the team. Sentimore declared for NFL. Time to start moving on some recruits for DT----only have about 3 weeks left.:yes::yes:

Depends on we get/miss on after NSD. We should be good on D-line this year. And if we sway a good number of guys by NSD, most will be redshirt fresh/soph ready to go. Can always go the JUCO route to plug some holes. But after seeing these JUCO guys struggle with grades, probably don't want to make a habit of going in that direction.

At 6'1" (and we all know how measurements are not always accurate), Crayton would be the shortest DL on the roster. If, and that may be a big "if", the coaching staff is concerned with his height, I have two words for them: Jimmy Noonan!

Height for the bigs matters more in a 3-4 more than a 4-3. A lot of 4-3 DTs are 6'2" or under.

His play is top notch. people fear what they dont know/understand. He's got a prosthetic of some type and I think that scares people

Ya, it's not like they put a piece of wood in his shoe. I doubt anyone could watch his film and realize that he is missing half a foot by how he plays.

fwiw, i emailed the following message to ut coaches jones, jancek, stripling & thigpen earlier today:

hello and welcome to ut! I'm very pleased with the reports coming out of knoxville on the hard work you guys are putting in on the recruiting trail and elsewhere.

Hundreds of vol fans have been following rod crayton's recruitment closely on volnation.com for over a year, and he has become a fan favorite among the prospects we're looking at. I understand that some members of your staff have been in touch with him but he has not yet been offered, and many of us are hoping that we will tender an offer before someone else snaps hiim up.

But i just wanted to provide some more info about this outstanding young man, as he is a special player and a leader who i'd love to see suiting up as a vol. I've followed ut football recruiting since 1976 and have never seen a defensive lineman put up pinball numbers like rod's (157 tackles, 4 sacks, 6 ff, 3 fr, 22 qb hurries in 12 games in 2012). He may also be the nation's strongest hs football player not just this year, but of all time. In addition, his work ethic is stellar and he's academically qualified.

imo, rod crayton personifies everything a future vol for life should be. not only would he be the strongest vol to ever play the game, his incredible work ethic and commitment to overcome his so-called disability would be an ongoing source of inspiration for his teammates. While his height is a bit less than ideal, he more than makes up for it with his power, quickness and relentless approach to the game. He will be a force to reckon with wherever he ends up, one that offensive guards dread facing.

So if y'all have decided to not offer rod, i hope you'll reconsider. I've never before written the coaching staff about a prospect, but there's just something very special about rod crayton and i really hope he's a vol next year.

Best wishes for a terrific 1st signing class, a successful off-season and a winning 2013 season! We're glad to have y'all in knoxville.

i also included links to articles about crayton that have been shared here before and all the stats i could find, along with some of burn the boats' glowing comments about him.

come on maaaan!!!!

His height is 6'1 to 6'2 that is not fudged at all. His weight is 305 to 310. Now I know his height is shorter than most but his wing span, which also matters, is 6'7.5. Which is the wing span of a guy who is 6'4 to 6'5. He is also just 17. He is still growing. He is in some cases 2 yrs younger than most DL's. On top of that he is number 6 all time in tackles number 1 in sacks number 1 in QB hurries number 1 in fumble recoveries in the state of Alabama (all time). He is also as far as I can find the only player ever to be first team all state for three years and he is up for lineman of the year and Mr Football for the second time.

If the kid wants to be a Vol, this staff should have already taken his commitment IMO. All he does is make plays. His power sets him apart from alot of young guys on the DL who need a year/2 in a S&C program to get to an SEC level. He would walk onto campus as one of the strongest guys at UT. TAKE!!

I really admire this guy and wish the staff would offer. I realize this offer may come with some risk but if you are going to take a risk I would like to see it on this guy. I have seen some other offers that I think would be more of a risk. JMO

Also, it is at huge position of need.

Do you have a clue what is holding schools back? Has anyone said we are not offering you because X?
