So how much credence do ya put into recruiting services, they all said Palardy was no. 1 in nation last year. Either he's been bothered by nagging injury or the recruiting services don't know crap!

Or we use Adidas balls instead of the springier Nikes?

Don't really know about this one....but Dooley filling in an anticipated need with a local kid. My only guess, helps with good press locally and maybe we have kicker issues.

Anyway, I don't really care until late October. Just like last year, at that point is a good time to start really judging the class. If there aren't 2-3 DTs and 2-3 DE's by then we are in trouble.

It would be nice if this works out like Buzz Peterson taking JuJuan Smith. No one offered him a scholarship and we all know how that worked out. Dooley is a stickler for detail from everything I have heard and if he thinks that this will fix some of our special team problems he probably could care less about how a bunch of coaching wannabes think.

Remember he was raised on conservative SEC football and the kicking game is just as important as offense and defense. That theory was the basis of the Neyland coaching philosophy and influenced SEC football for generations now. Every successful coach in the SEC has talked about this.

Not sure about this. I didn't think we would take a kicker this year especially considering the lack of scholarhips to give, but they must be really concerned with Palardy. He's not been healthy that much since he's been here.

I agree. Hopefully it's also a case that CDD is expecting much more attrition.

I understand everyone's concern about taking a kicker with so many of what we consider major needs, but there is something going on that we are not privy to. I think we (myself included) are so focus on LB's DT's and DE's that this hit us by surprise. Plus, kickers don't get a lot respect in this game until they hit the winning FG or drop a punt inside the 10 yd. line. With all that being said, and with the limited number that we can take, this must be a big need that we just didn't know about. Welcome to the Vol family Bullock !!

Same thing said about Mr. Palardy not too long ago.

If Palardy's leg is jacked up like alot of people are saying then why risk damaging it on kick offs...let Bullock do smack them into the endzone.

tooth fairy. In Dooley we trust! This is just a damn wasted scholarship. How many do we have to give??? I am so over this guy and his bizarre recruiting philosophy, if that is what you call it. Dooley is all hat and no cattle.

Thank you you just made the ignore button

Do we have to use an Adidas ball because of our contract with them? Does the other team we play get to use a different ball for their kickoffs? Do we use a different ball for regular play?

I've read in several different places about the disadvantages our kickers have with the ball we use? Any chance Dooley changes the contract at some point or is it not really that big of a deal?

Hey! What the hell? I thought we already gave a token scholarship to a local kid in this class. A scholly for this kicker? I hear that Karns has a pretty good long snapper, will he be the next to commit? This sucks.

Short summary of why people are freaking out:

1. Tripper predicted yesterday that we would see a new commit at kicker and that this meant "something's going on with Palardy."

2. The general expectation (contradicted by a few, yourself included) is that we will take a small class this year. That we offer an unheralded kicker when schollies are so limited would seem to mean something bad happened that needs to be fixed. It also could just mean that Dooley's up for serious housecleaning and that we're going to see 8-10 guys leave the program in the next few months. But without inside info, it's hard to say.

It means this, IMO. :good!:

A kid who can kick the ball 71 yards isn't getting any touchbacks in college football. That ball is actually getting caught at the 1 yard line. If you want to guarantee touchbacks, you've gotta send it 74+ yards.

Notice he has 4+ second hang time though. In reality that is the number one quality for a KO specialist needed. If you can kick it to the one yard line but give the coverage team time to be there that is scarier for a return man than being halfway back in the endzone and having the coverage team 10-15 yrds away from you.

The fact of the matter is that he's averaging <65 yards. That won't change drastically.

Tennessee recruited Bullock for his kickoff and placekicking abilities, West coach Scott Cummings said.

Last season, Bullock booted 86 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone. That average included a nice amount of onside kicks.

Bullock has since added five yards and a few tenths to his hang time.

"He's kicking it 70-75 yards with a 3.9 hangtime right now," said Cummings. "That's his average."

Before we get all too giddy with this guy and toss out Palardy, remember it's a college game. It's no longer high school. There's 100,000 fans not 5. There's competition, more demands from the coaching staff in terms of placement.

My point is, there's still Darr and Palardy. This commitment only strengthens an area that you take when you have an opportunity like this. If we have a great placekicker, punter, KO the past 3 years, we have a big difference in records. So, i think it's a good idea to take this guy. And it's phenomenal that we have all three.

Palardy came in as the #1 kicker in high school. He was said to be able to hit a FG from 70 yards. His kickoffs were going out of the end zone. We have heard all this kicker hype before. I will believe it when I see it.

Unless Palardy is lying he has been injured. Lincoln was injured a good bit too. We need some better luck when it comes to kickers. Either that or Palardy's high school coach was right.

According to Wilhoits ball test Wilson kicks farther than Nike.

It was actually the opposite.

If I recall correctly, Wilson makes multiple footballs. One of them is very springy, but that's not the one we use. The one we use is fairly dead (probably preferred by QBs or some such).

Or we use Adidas balls instead of the springier Nikes?

We don't use adidas balls. I don't think adidas even makes footballs. We use Wilson, which is not, to my knowledge, owned by adidas. In basketball, this means we're one of the only teams using the NCAA Tournament ball before the tournament actually starts. In football, not so much.

Daniel Lincoln just plain sucked. He was the worst kicker at UT in atleast 30 years. He was a huge embarassment even before he started sporting a mohawk. I hope he gets herpes.

I know you're mostly joking here, but he did have a pretty solid Freshman season.
