The 2001 SEC Championship Game
One of the most shocking upsets of the last decade was this Championship game between LSU and Tennessee. The Volunteers came in ranked number two in the AP poll, Coaches Poll and the BCS rankings while the Fighting Tigers were only ranked 21 in the AP. A Tennessee win meant a trip to the National Championship game, Phil Fulmer’s second in 4 years, but the 31-20 loss to LSU could be thought of as the start of Fulmer’s downfall. He did last another 7 seasons in Knoxville, but his team never again made it into the BCS discussion even though Tennessee did play in 2 more SEC Championship games after 2001. It was a devastating loss for Tennessee, an incredible win for LSU and one of the most shocking upsets of the last decade.

I was there. Still trying to block it from my memory. We outnumbered their crowd 3-1 and they were ten times louder. Granted, we didn't have much to cheer about.

I drove around for hours after that game. Still was sweet the week before beating Spurrier in his beloved swamp.

Let's just say I would be wearing a very big ring right now if Tennessee wins that game... still hurts.

And possibly and even bigger ring after a trip to the Rose Bowl :(

To me it's significance isn't the shock, but rather that it was the beginning of the end for the Fulmer era

The 'shock' was that there was a DC in the SEC title game who thought that DL should be standing at the snap, even after the mobile backup QB came in the game.

Forget your lanes boys, just get upfield.

I spent a hefty sum of money on tickets and hotel to get to go to that game. It still gives me a sour stomach thinking about it...

Do we keep bringing this game up b/c we have some sort of punishment we must pay to the CFB gods before we can return to prominence?

Two losing seasons in 4 yrs hurts a lot worse.

I was also at this game. I remember sitting in the GA Dome for 45 minutes afterward just staring at the rafters at what we had just pissed away. A backup QB...A BACKUP QB...I just said that over and over.

On a side note, I remember LSU fans being extremely courteous for a change. Didn't hear one giving crap to anyone, the good ones knew how tough it was for us.

This started a slide that we are still attempting to get out of.

Maybe this has been mentioned before but who are you? Former player, trainer, staff? Just wondering, thanks.

Every freaking time I pay a shrink to remove this memory from my mind somebody has to go and remind me of it again. This is getting expensive people.

Well, off to the shrink to have the memory swiped again ...

No ... no 4 yrs losing doesn't hurt more.

We were dominant that year. It's one thing to be in a slump and not be winning. It's another thing to be that good and lose to a back-up qb. I won't remember our records in those 4 losing years when I'm 60 and talking to my grand kids but I will go to my grave remembering where we were when we lost to the back up qb. That day summed up every reason why CPF needed to go, in my opinion. That game hurts.
