The early word from Chapel Hill and the hiring of Larry Fedora is that Fedora may very well keep Allen Mogridge on his staff. If that's the case then I think that helps UNC in their effort to keep Justin Meredith.

Will TE Coach Eric Russell's reported departure affect Meredith's decision?

Who knows. But Tennessee has a real chance to upgrade their staff if Russell leaves IMO.

I still cant figure out all the hype surrounding Meredith. I think they could do way better at TE in next year's class if they hold off on taking one. Then again the staff may desperately want a TE this year.

I think somebody said that there were only 8 or 9 in this class they would even consider. Them or nobody else. Seems TE was gonna be a Meredith, Jackson, or that USF guy, and nobody else.

Probably done at TE if Meredith stays solid to UNC.

If they could somehow get Sean Price to change his commitment they should take him immediately. Everybody else, including Meredith IMO, are marginal takes. I like Clear and Downs. Plus we have another year with MR. JMO.

I agree. I don't think Meredith is going to do any better than Downs. I think Downs is going to be a pretty good TE as he matures. Very athletic.

Not sold on Rivera, he really struggled getting open against SEC competition and holding his own physically. Yes, the backup QB's were a big part of the problem, but falling/being pushed down on the goaline against Vandy and allowing that interception return was absolutely inexcusable on Rivera's part.

He has outstanding hands for a TE, but his power and strength seem to be his problems and his blocking ability.

He played great against UF, then disappeared.

Rivera needs help on the outside to be effective and once Hunter went down he got more attention. Rivera has to learn to make the big catch. Too many times he drops passes when the pressure is on.

Rivera started off great in the passing game this year but he dropped a lot of critical passes as the season went along. Not only that but he really does struggle monumentally in run blocking. But that should really come as no surprise based on his struggles there in 2010 as well. What Tennessee needs to find is a complete Tight End. I think they are going to end up having that in Cameron Clear.

You are so correct in the complete TE. 75% of these 4-5 star recruits at TE are big WR in high school. The sites have them listed as TE's so they can garner a higher ranking hense more offers. They do not run block, and most will never be more then 225lb-230lb. People have gotten carried away with this hybrid. Some schools are going with 2. They will have their Inline guy and their "Hybrid" UT wants this hybrid type or big ass WR who will never block down on a Tackle or DE. The complete TE are out there but UT feels with Clear and Downs they are good for a few years. Downs has a way to go on blocking though. A year in weight program will help.

And, sadly, Rivera is probably the only upperclassman on this year's offense that will have a shot at the NFL.

:good!:

FWIW, Meredith is wearing a Tennessee shirt at his HS bball game tonight.

Rivera making an NFL roster would be a huge shock.

I think Rivera would have had a great year if he were on a team where the QB would look for the TE rather than the WR who is double covered on the go route 94% of the time. Maybe our QB grows up a bit and realizes he has other guys to throw to. I think Rivera will be playing on Sundays. If he gets drafted or not depends on our QB willing to check it down or look for the underneath throw when the deep routes are not there.

Rivera's good, and will play on Sunday's IMO. He needs to work on blocking this year and get better at staying on his feet. I heard Malik joking about him falling down alot once, and damned if I didn't start noticing it after that!
