'12 NJ ATH Kaiwan Lewis

His recruitment of Kaiwan Lewis suggests otherwise.

Kaiwan Lewis is not a Vol yet. Not by a long shot. How hard is it to impress a Jersey kid with the chance to play in the SEC? The real test is in the closing.

Connecting with the kid is one thing. Knowing which "handlers" to connect to is another thing. I know, I know...examples like Wright and Moore went against parent wishes. But this is the exception, which is why we knew about the schisms to begin with.

Seriously.

On a lighter note, clearly Lance should have spent more time connecting with Gerald Jones.

You're making recruiting sound like rocket science.

It's not.

Currently is sitting at 19 offers with UF & FSU being the latest. Lewis plans on narrowing his list of schools this summer, taking his official visits before the football season, and making his decision sometime in November. He names UT as one of the few schools he is the most interested in. He wants "a home away from home" when picking his college.

"The schools that are recruiting me the hardest and the schools that I am most interested in are Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, Boston College, Rutgers, UConn and Tennessee."
"I want to go to a school that is a home away from home. I want to go to a place with good academics that I can get my degree. I know some guys are going into the NFL draft without a degree, if the lockout happens they will not have anything to fall back on. I'm also looking for a place where the coaches care about me on and off the field; I want it to be like a family."

That sounds like pretty good news as that is what our staff likes to sell recruits on

It is good news. Lewis mentioned how he is looking for a "family atmosphere, coaches' care, & a home away from home" and that has VFL program written all over it.

It is a long way until NSD, but I believe we are definitely right there at the top with him. I think it could end up a Tennessee/South Carolina battle with LSU being in it as well. I would also bet that UF makes a serious run in the recruitment of Lewis.

"I'm trying to," Lewis admitted. "I'll be done trimming it right after May is over."

Lewis said he has been in recent contact with the coaches from Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, Virginia, Stanford and Cal. Those are the schools that have been recruiting him the hardest.

While he doesn't have a favorite Lewis does know of just one school that he's sure will make his first cut.

"Florida for sure," Lewis responded. "They're just recruiting me the hardest and I feel comfortable with their staff."

While LSU was one of his first offers this year, the state of LA is loaded with top notch LB's this year. Which is very rare. We load up on instate LB's only this year. Though Lewis would make a very good MLB.

"So far Stanford and Tennessee have come be the school. I have received calls from Connecticut and the University of Georgia but a lot more schools will be coming though next week because I will be in from Spring break. Auburn, Florida, South Carolina, Florida State, Stanford, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and others are showing a lot of interested. My goals are to be a great senior leader and get my team to a third straight title and get better every day and finish the school year strong in the class room."

"I just love it down south. Everyone is just so nice and polite and coaches make you feel welcome there. My father's family is from South Carolina so we really like it down there. The facilities are really nice too. Everything is new and the Dodie (Anderson) Academic Center is really nice as well. The team is on the rise as well and they really had a great year last year. They are bringing in top notch talent and brought in Jadeveon Clowney last year. They future looks good for them."

I am taking a road trip down south in July to visit Florida, South Carolina, Florida State, Auburn, and Tennessee so I will have a good feel for all of them after that trip. I will set up a top five or ten though, around June 1st."

Does Lewis, who also said he was going to try to make a trip to Virginia before hitting the aforementioned other schools on his list, have a leader?

"Not really," he replied. "I don't have a leader or anything at this time. I would say the schools that stand out because they recruit me harder than anyone else are South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, and Virginia. I plan to take my time and see all the schools and then I will make my pick on Signing Day."
