He kind of reminds me of that Ole Miss kid Dexter McCluster. Small, fast, long hair that flies behind him as he torches Monte Kiffin's defense...

He's faster than McCluster, but he's not as shifty. McCluster breaks ankles like Iverson did back in the day.

I read through this entire post and people are saying that he isnt big enough, or someone is faster than him, blah, blah, blah. The one thing that should matter with ALL Rb's is IF the Oline opens up a hole. If you give a guy like this that is small, shifty, and fast, a huge hole to hit, it doesnt matter who is carrying the ball, they will get positive yardage.

For example, the discussion still comes up who was a better RB, Barry or Emmit? My take on this question is that if you put Barry behind the Cowboys line, the comparision wouldnt even be in question. Emmit had one of the best Olines EVER. Barry was running for his life most of his career. You look at almost every Great Rb, they had a GREAT or GOOD Oline. We make or break a RB. PERIOD.

So, if improvements can be made to the Oline and they can actually grow a "SET", and blow open some huge holes, its not gonna matter who the back is. Now is this guy gonna be a off tackle, every down back? Who knows, he could come in behind a Good Oline next year or 2 and explode like that james kid at oregon. Or Rogers at Oregon St couple of years ago. You dont have to have to be a Bruiser Rb to wear out a Defense. A smaller back can just as easily wear out a Defense, because weather the defense is getting run over or chasing a smaller back for 4 quarters, its all the same, you get tired.

Only time will tell, but it all really depends on the OLINE. You can have a ALL-WORLD RB and if your line doesnt make running lanes, the he will have to bounce outside all game and running east and west in the SEC does not work too often.

CO, just want to say that I, and I'm surely not alone, greatly appreciate your input on this board. Very insightful

Thanks, just trying to give a different perspective. People get too caught up in measureables. I remember watching the Ole miss game when Dexter ran all over us. Hes not a bruiser, and he WORE US OUT, the entire game. That just shows people that you dont have to have a Henry, Jamal, Foster in the backfield to have a "Good" running attack.

Hell you could even have a Jeff Powell, Transfer from William & Mary, remember the sugar bowl game against Miami ('85 or '86) when he hit that HUGE HOLE and went 60 yards. Bennie Blades who had "World Class Speed" according to the announcers, but the hole was so big that Powell just ran rite by him. If you make running lanes, it wont really matter who is running the ball. This year the holes werent there or the backs missed them. A RB coach would help ALOT. So, we'll see what happens. Just dont bash a kid because hes not 6'2 - 230lbs and runs a 4.24 -40. Just hope and Pray that the Line is BAD-A** next year.

Hey country, you had said a while back that you thought Heistand should return because, if I remember right, that for these young lineman consistency in coaching would be good for the future.

Any changes on your opinion?

Year-over-year improvement has got to start showing if the current composition of our OL is complete right? Seems like our Center play is crucial and lacking. Have you watched film of Mack Crowder from last years' class? You think he's got a future here next year or is he just providing depth until we get a real answer?

Brother at the end of the day, its about Results. The numbers speak for themselves. WE CANT RUN THE BALL.

I dont think a coaching change is ever a "GOOD" thing, when it comes to kids. ALot of kids kinda see coaches as father figures, because some kids dont have dads and its good to have someone in their lives that cares about them. It kinda irritates me when people say that kids dont choose a school for a position coach. Thats not entirely true. Some kids just bond with certain coaches. And I know Harry and hes a Great man, very honest and works his tail off. But at the end of the day when the oline doesnt perform, then that falls on the coach.

I still think that its a matter of what kind of Scheme that the OC and HC is wanting to run in their play calling. Harry is a Old School coach that wants to control the line of scrimmage and pound the ball. And when that doesnt happen everybody says it the position coach not doing his job. Its a tough situation for everyone. I just wish that we were able to run the ball, but we didnt, against anyone. Guys were getting blown back at the snap of the ball. But that could also be attributed to that we dont have "MEAN" guys. I never seen anyone get pissed, anyone get personal fouls called on them for playing mean. Not saying that personal fouls are good, but at least it lets the DLINE know, its gonna be a LONG day. Thats what I want to see. Guys get pissed off, play MEAN, EVERY SNAP.

So, to answer your question, maybe its would be good to get someone else in here that would be better suited to run a "spread" style offense. Because thats what we looked like during the season. Teams knew when we lined up in a "I" that we were going to run the ball off tackle or run a sweep. Thats way too predictable. I think we should be a Run first, play action team. Thats what TN is known for. Yeah its nice to throw the ball around, but when you cant run the ball, teams will just pin their ears back and cause turnovers.

I will go ahead and say that if TN doesnt change their Offensive Scheme and play calling, we wont win 6 games next year. We are too predictable. Teams know when we are going to run and pass. Thats a recipe for disaster. JMHO

:hi:

Thanks for your response CO. ...And I agree on mean, need the guys to want to knock some d!*%$ in the dirt IMO!

One Bolded part- did see that once from Bullard, maybe not enuff of it though!

Its not just the Center, its the guards too. They are too slow and we dont run enough of a variety of running plays to be effective. The center was blown up by almost every D tackle that we played against this year. I told a buddy of mine, after watching the Montana game, that we are in trouble. Their line was small and they whipped us all game. I mean ALL GAME. It was kinda sad. It got worse as the year went along. But again, they ran the same 5 or 6 running plays, all year. The play calling has to change. Im beginning to wonder why Kiffin called the plays and not chaney. I think we are seeing why now.

This is a wait & see guy for me. He feels like a Martaze Jackson, D. Sapp, & Crump type take.

Last thing we need at RB is a guy who is just used to out running everyone.

Hopefully he will be a willing physical runner.

Just like D.Young huh? We'll see what this little speed guy does. Wish we would've concentrated on some of the other guys. But it is what it is now.

You ever slapped a guy that stands 6'6 340lbs? Ever think that guy may slap back, and he probably slaps harder than you do? LOL. Some people just arent born mean.

I wouldn't recruit a lineman if he wasn't a mean SOB. Tough teams win more often than not. It all starts with some mean grimey big uglies up front on both sides of the ball.

You are SPOT ON. But its hard to tell if a kid is mean or not. Every kid doesnt have a tape like the O'conner kid.
Thats why I like Certain drills in camps. It gives you at least an Idea of what kind of Motor or Mean streak a kid has. I want a kid thats mean, doesnt stop and even plays dirty from time to time.

Your best linemen are dirty. I hate to say it but it's true. Now I don't want them to cut down on guys dirty. But I do want them to finish blocks. You saw what it did to great/sociopath d-lineman in Suh. Football is all about being mentally tough from the get go.

Alabama runs the same 5-6 running plays all the time. So does LSU. The difference is in execution. How do you explain these boys that got "whipped by montana" throwing Bama and LSU players around? That is the head scratcher to me. Those DLs are the best in CFB and our boys were whipping them very well at times.

Are you sure that we "Throwed" around bama and Lsu dline? We must not have watched the same games. We may have had a handful of plays that we showed what we could do, but the score board told a different story.

And bama and lsu dont run the same 5 or 6 plays. Their play calling is by far more advanced than what we run. They call running plays out of 10 to 12 different sets. If they ran the same 5 or 6 plays, then dont you think that Wilcox would have adjusted and put 7-8 in the box if he knew what was coming? Those teams play calling is why they beat the snot out of us. Kept us on our toes.

Teams that watch our tapes, they have a good idea of what we are going to run, when we run the ball.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming. I like this kid, watson. Hope he does well.
