Are you sure Chelea O'Connor is still on the softball team? Her name is not listed on the 2012 roster to the right of the player bio OCI submitted. We are playing the 2012 schedule even though it is 2011.

If she is not on the team, I hope she is still in Knoxville or left under pleasant circumstances.

She's not on the team but still enrolled in classes IIRC.

This would be a huge pickup.

I agree you dont have to recruit against Penn State, you have to sell Tennessee. This guy isn't going to Penn State, period.

So there is no reason to try and recruit "against them". Sell him on everything Tennessee. At least 1 Oline is a must in this class and hopefully it's a difference maker. Hard to see this guy hasn't jumped to the top of the recruiting board regardless of position.

The coaches will not mention one thing about the scandal other than "they understand it's a difficult time for him." They did this with both Trent Taylor and Justin Meredith. The positive recruiting pitch to those is what made UT the choice assuming Meredith is a Vol.

"I talked to coach Hiestand and he likes that I can move and how strong I am and he just likes how I play and aggressive I am and he wants to get me out there," O'Connor said.

"As far as Tennessee, I know about them as much as I do the other programs. I've checked them out and looked at them, but I'm trying to listen to what everybody has to see and get information as we go," O'Connor offered. "I never got to go and my parents did and they love the location and the area and all that."

"I was definitely answering phone calls from coaches that were still interested in me and still in contact. Coach (Jim) Michalczik out at Cal, and coach (Rick) Neuheisel, at UCLA, they've called me a couple of times," he said. "But, I was pretty set that I was going to Penn State and then the whole situation happened and then I decided I needed to keep my options open and step back and start over and start a 0-0 ballgame."

Staff really likes our chances with O'Connor and is selling him on the fact that he would be the only OL taken in this class. Would likely RS his FR year and compete for a starting spot (most likely at guard) his RS FR year.

Sounds good. After reading the previous post, it sounds like we are about even with everyone else. These next few weeks will be telling.

Agreed. Nothing in that article stood out to me. With dozens of schools calling, we have to make that cut down to the 3-5 schools he will seriously look into.

in two years aren't we looking now at having 4 Sr and 1 Jr on the OL? If the staff thinks he could win the job against a SR why not say he could compete for the spot immediately?

We don't need anymore OL coming in here and starting immediately. That would either mean the new kid is an absolute stud or more likely that we have a serious issue on the o-line. Ideally he'd RS and see what he can do against the veterans his RS Fresh year and beyond.

OL in the SEC generally need a year to transform their bodies through a S&C program. Ideally, the staff would like every OL to redshirt his freshman year. We have played so many true freshmen on the OL the past couple years out of necessity. With a year in the S&C program, the staff feels that O'Connor could compete for a starting spot with the current OL on the roster.

Wow, that is a nice compliment to O'Connor, an indictment of the current OL or both.

I don't think it is an indictment. I think no team wants to start underclassmen on the line and only will if it is an absolute necessity or the player is really special. We have played them out of necessity and I really think they have held up well considering.

Thought about this earlier, but I don't really know why being the only olineman in the class would be such a good thing for him

Just lets the kid know how special he is. CDD is pulling in a top notch class, possibly top 10 or better. If O'Conner is pulled into a class of this caliber it's money down the road for him.
