12/14/13 Huge Day

I would hope we aren't shocked by the noise.

I'm sure it's nothing like playing at Rupp, and I would venture to guess that our opening game at Xavier was louder than this will be.

It's doubtful many places are as loud as 24k can be but still, just having seen or heard something before doesn't necessarily mean that you're prepared for the next time it happens. For instance, you say it's not going to be like Rupp but you have go back 7 seasons to find a game where UT kept it inside of 10 at UK, that's not exactly screaming "we're ready for this". UT has 4 road wins combined last season and this season, and none of those 4 wins would compare favorably to winning here next Saturday. Not saying the Vols can't win, they most certainly can, but it will be tough.

And yeah, it's going to be a lot louder than the 9k+ you faced at Xavier, without 2 of their starters.

Well it was almost 10k, which I don't think is much different than the 12k you're predicting.

Tennessee under Martin has gone into Florida and won, played at Georgetown and as I've mentioned also at Rupp. I can't remember once in the last 3 years where the road crowd really effected this team, we've gone into much more hostile arenas than WSUs.

Now we may very well lose, I just think it'll have nothing to do with the crowd if we do.

How can you say that with as bad as we have been on the road the past few yrs?

I'm not denying at all that we've struggled on the road, I just don't think it's had the least bit to do with opposing crowds. We went into Florida and whooped dat azz, yet go into Georgia and lose, explain that one? There was probably 35 people in attendance for UGA game, the ODome on the flip side is one of the tougher places to play.

Ron Baker is easily the most impactful Player on the shockers. No question about it. He will be the best player on the floor. He's Dane Bradshaw with skills. Early is also very dynamic. Van vleet and cotton are absolute nails. Regardless of which team has more overall talent, track records suggest that the Shockers will dictate the game. If they play their game well, they will win the game.

Track record being......last years game?

It would be hard to call 1 game a track record vs the whole final four thing and undefeated season. They have a track record of toughness, coaching, and success that tennessee's current team has no clue about.

Martin has a track record of out coaching their coach....track record that one.

I would have guessed that the difference is the crowd. But.
Recently read an interesting article on home field advantage.
The difference is much greater in basketball than all other sports.
Author said that it's an unintentional bias of the referees.
Home teams get the crucial calls.
You can really see it at Rupp.
Blame it on the refs! Works for me.

See I could credit home crowd for a part of our home success, I just don't think road crowds are part of the reason we struggle on the road.

As I've mentioned we went into the o dome and handled business, that's one of the tougher places around to play. On the flip side Georgia had probably less fans than a RTL yet they handled us? I just have a hard time seeing the road crowd as having much of an effect on us, that's all.

You're hitting the nail on the head man. Home crowds can most definitely have an impact on the game, but like you said, if you look at Tennessee's road struggles it doesn't seem to be related to the crowd. Instead it's a variety of other factors.

Didn't want to start another coaching and game preparation rant, so, I'll go with the difference in officiating for now.

I think in order for UT to pull off a win next Saturday.......

1. Play tough physical defense from the opening tip.
2. Win the turnover and rebounding battles.
3. Limit the 3 point shots and feed Maymon and Stokes inside all game.
4. Stretch the bench by giving Pops and Cheivous a few minutes to rest Stokes, Maymon and Richardson.

This will be a tough game but it is winnable.

5. shoot better than 70% from the line.

I vote bench Chievous the entire game. Rampant mistakes.

This will be the Vols' coming out party, mark my words. Witchita St will gameplan on shutting down Stokes, which will lead to Maymon returning to old form, and finding his groove. Mcrae is also due to get hot, and you know he's gonna come out looking for his shot on this big stage. Mcrae and Maymon combine for 40-45 pts, Stokes gets his usual 13 and 10, and we (finally) demonstrate Cuonzo's smothering, grind-it-out defense for 40 minutes to lead the Vols to a 8-10 pt road victory. The two early season losses have done nothing to diminish my expectations and confidence in this team, I figured it would take a few weeks for them to start really gelling. It's a long season folks, and Saturday is going to kick off an undefeated month of December for our Vols.

Wudrwu, how is DJ Bowles doing this year? He's from my area. Played at Cleveland high and then transferred to Oldsmar Christian for his senior year in the Tampa area. Is he getting minutes?

They are even renaming streets in Wichita for this game:

WICHITA, Kan.- The City of Wichita renamed Waterman Street ‘Play Angry Place at an outside ceremony that took place on the corner of E. Waterman St. and S. St. Francis at 2 p.m. today.

Waterman Street is the street that’s just south of INTRUST Bank Arena which runs east and west. The street renaming will remain in effect for one week.

Reminds me of 1979 or 80 when I was a youngin' in Lenoir City and LC was playing Maryville in the playoffs. Someone painted all the STOP signs in LC with "Maryville" under STOP. It stayed there for years.
