So on our vacation, we took the kids to the Secret City Festival in Oak Ridge. They had games, a zip line, chemistry exhibits and hands on experiments. The big draw we thought was going to be the WWII exhibits and military demonstrations. They had US, British, and German re-enactors in full uniform and weapons.
It was great, except they did not do any battle re-enactments. They had a .30 cal machine gun, .40 cal mortar, and a howitzer firing demonstrations. They had the soldiers advance in echelon formations, but no battles.
The reason? The Oak Ridge City Council decided that battle re-enactments would glorify war. For a city that was developed because of the war?
Everything else was okay, except the battles. For a city that was developed because of the war and played a vital role in ending it.
