11 TN RB/CB Devrin Young - UT Signee

so just because he plays in TN...his numbers dont mean anything....classic! He would be putting up the same numbers if he played in FLA, TX, Cali...he is just that good........if you can play...you can play...doesnt matter where you are from...and then the ETSU comment you made...is absurd...if you think this kid is ETSU material...that tells me all I need to know about your knowledge of the kid and your football IQ...have to question what you are even looking at on the football field...

I wouldn't go quite that far. Outside of GA, LA, and maybe OH, kids are probably going to have a drop in stats if they go from any other state to one of those that you named. He may still be able to play, but do you really think he'd be putting up 3 or 400 yards up against big name teams in some of those states?

In case anyone hasn't seen I went and saw Devrin Young's homepage and he only has one offer and that's from Tennessee. Build that fence coach Kiffin.

It's not September 1st yet. When programs can submit written offers Rivals will eventually update their list to include others. You are assuming he sucks based on an offer list that can't be officially started for 2011 prospects for 3-4 more days.

I think he would be a standout where ever he played........any state...he went against many of the kids from GA, FLA, TX at combines...camps(UT camp plenty of kids from everywhere)....and they can't deal with him...he stands out whereever he goes.....

Of course a player wouldnt be "as" dominate with a stepup in level of competition.....thats why high school studs bust in college, and college studs bust in the NFL. Jut cause a kid completely lights up weaker competition doesnt mean he cant be successful against more talented teams as well. A lot of people seem to forget, if he played in another state with "better" talent, it would also apply to his teammates....you know.... the guys blocking for him and throwing him the ball. it works both ways.

The kid has only gone to two camps and has dominated at both of them as an underclassman. The UT camp had some solid talent and he did very well. I think this kid is only going to get better with time.

Putting a fence around TN means keeping players that are big-time in state, not every single prospect with a scholarship offer from ETSU.

Was that a track scholarship from ETSU? Not sure how a non-football grant even relates.

*NOTE: See Josh Hawkins. Wasn't he a "beast" too at Lenoir City or Loudon? Yeah, exactly.

No, he was never called a beast by anyone. Minus maybe a few in Loudon County.

he has been to several other combines..

named 9th grade MVP (overall) of NUC in ATL as a frosh...invited to U100
had the fastest shuttle time in the nation for a 9th grader two years ago(Nike Combine charlotte)

Adidas Camp(9th grade@ UT) where he only worked as CB.....people in attendance said he was the top CB there

If the kid keeps getting better and matures physically while keeping his great quickness and speed.....I see no reason why he cant be a big-time playmaker at a BCS school.....and why not the home state program?

I should have said this year! I have only read of him going to camp at UCLA and UT.

+1

Hawkins was a 3-star back if I remember correctly, and people were clamouring that he should possibly play another position in college. He was also like the 15th or something RB prospect in the state.

It'd be foolish to equate Hawkins to Young at this stage, because Young is going to get more offers than Hawkins. Outside of teams like Kentucky and Mississippi State, Fulmer and company didn't have a lot of competition at landing this guy. It's not like he was a stud recruit who turned into a bust.

Okay, how many stars does Devrin Young have again???

Exactly. He hasn't been rated yet. My prediction is a 3* on Rivals and a 3* on Scout. He will not be an ESPNU 150 player either.... so yes, he does equate to Josh Hawkins; an East TN kid that all the locals think are great because he runs by 1 Div I Defensive Back prospect about once a year. In Florida, he'd have to run by 1 or 2 Div I DBs every single game.

If I'm wrong, I'll eat the crow. But watch.... he will be a 3* prospect.

Young >> Hawkins...

No he doesn't. Rivals is never right about which schools have offered players schollys. Everyone knows that.

The only scholly he has right now is a partial track scholly at ETSU. He's 5'6-5'7 and plays football in East TN. He'd have to avg 300 yards per game to even be considered an elite prospect.

For all the homers who defend TN high school football (particularly East TN high school football), can you name a single player who has made a significant difference on the field in the past 3 years in D-I? Don't give me Patrick Turner, he was way over-rated. Even still.... how about someone from East TN???

Exactly.

Young >> Hawkins...

I'll give you that, he's probably better. But only in the eyes of East TN ppl. Nationally, he's just another East TN local hero. He'll be a 3* and probably go to Vandy or Kentucky if he's lucky.

Joey Matthews was a 4* or 5* from East TN.... and he made Jon Crompton look like John Elway.

BTW.....

Josh Hawkins was the 20th overall player and 3rd best RB behind...... guess who.... Dennis Rogan (#1) and Aaron Crawford??? (#2)..... hmmmm

Okay, so let's compare Devrin Young to Dennis Rogan?? I know Dennis Rogan was a "monster" in East TN. He was the #1 RB in TN in 2007 and he doesn't have a single carry in college.

Moral of the story, I'm sure Young will do SOMETHING but people comparing him to Noel Devine is just ludicrous. Noel Devine was the Barry Sanders of Florida H.S. football. Devrin Young may very well end up at UT but he will struggle to get onto the field, that I can promise you.

Bryce Brown played against weak comp. in Kansas too.... the difference was he literally ran circles around defenses, his combines were insane, and he proved in the Army All American game he could dominate against the best of the best.

Devrin Young has been dominant in camps as well. Not Bryce Brown dominant, but still dominant nevertheless. I don't think he's as good as Noel Devine, but he's far superior to Josh Hawkins and will be a better prospect than Rogan. He should be at least one of the top 3 in-state prospects for 2011.

The more I watch this kid the more he reminds me of Tony Carter who played corner for FSU. The biggest difference is that I think he'll be a great return man. I really think a team like Wake Forest would be good for his skill set at corner. If they would let him play the Alphonso Smith role I think he'd flourish in a system like that.

Brandon Warren (at FSU) and Dennis Rogan

Since you included P. Turner I guess you include Nashville as E. TN..but for the purpsoes of this exercise...I'll only list kids East of Nashville so here is a list for you

Harrison Smith (starter @ ND)
Dennis Rogan (starter @ TN)
Randall Cobb (starter at UK)
Coty Sensabaugh (starter @ Clemson)
Jared McGaha (starter @ Michigan state)
Kyrus Lanxter (starter@ UK)
Baron Huber (starter @ Alabama)
Johnthan Johnson (starter @Wake Forest)
Garrett Reynolds (starter @ North Carolina)

also plenty of E. TN kids have received scholly's from big school as well....would you like for me to list those?

East Tennessee doesn't produce a lot of D1 talent but over the years has produced quality D1 and NFL players:

Current/recent NFL Players I am aware of:
Gerald Sensabaugh - Dobyns-Bennett
Aubrayo Franklin - Science Hill
Jason Witten - Elizabethton
Tyson Clabo - Farragut
Garrett Reynolds - Knox Carter
Terdell Sands - Howard
Vince Redd - Elizabethton
Chad Pennington - The Webb School
Daniel Bullocks - Hixson
Josh Bullocks - Hixson
Tony Brown - Chattanooga City

Stanford(offer) is recruting him as an RB..they love his speed and versatility....and they are looking for an influx of speed....Jim Harbaugh will be in Knoxville to visit Devrin in December or January.......they have only offered 2 backs.. one instate...Devrin is their #1 OOS priority at RB in 2011 class....they want him bad....I wouldnt be surprised if UVA offers next week...or Oregon very soon as well.......last week he heard from Georgia, Duke, UVA, Oregon......Nebraska has inquired.....recently as well...

and oh...Auburn has invited Devrin and his family on an unoffical when they play Ball State..they actually have invited him to 2 games..but he is only going to one....

and who was that guy again that said he wasnt going to play D-1....partial track scholly

Stanford doesn't have that much talent on O. They have a QB but that's it.
