In terms of game outcomes, the insistence on relying on walk ons in the kicking game makes no sense. Can you really afford not to build depth here as with other positions?
Daniel Lincoln was a scholarship player if I recall... so it seems this argument holds no water. A better argument would be; "Why waste a scholarship on a player who can't get it done when we can have a walk-on probably do just as good."
For the record, I am not taking that argument.
Don't see how that's a better argument Nick. Scolarships are the "currency" of college football. We spend our money on what's important. Recruiting is supposed to be about coaches doing their job at determining who has value in the marketplace and spending wisely. When it comes to freebie walk ons, as with any economy, you usually get what you pay for. Don't use poorly executed previous player evaluation as rationale for withholding a scholly - else we'd never scholarship anybody at any position.
Its the assumed "bottom line" that is the real head scratcher. Just to use the team we just played as an example. Their kicker, Casey Barth, still has eligibility, but they've already got a scholarship commit from a great incoming freshman. Barth's brother played at Carolina before him and is now in the League. His predecessor played for the Vikings after his career at Carolina and now is involved in coaching the kickers there. They also have a great punter in Feagles whose dad had a great NFL career. You really can't have it both ways. We are one pulled groin (which Palardy suffered with early this season) away from literally having no one rostered for the spot. And the logic is (after Alabama last year and last night) "we don't have a spot?" I think I'd find a spot.
I'll cut you some slack since you appear to be new to both the recruiting forum and Tennessee's current situation but we are in no place to accept a kicker right now. We have only a few spots left and they MUST be filled with players at positions of more importance and need. Sorry but we aren't taking a scholly kicker on this year.
Been familiar with Tennessee's situation for several decades. Don't feel like you have to cut me slack, just tell me, given last night's result, what is a position "of more importance and need?" I mean this as a serious, well intentioned football question. Not trying to do any testosterone driven smackdown. Just tell me how kicker is not as important as any other position.

We have a true freshman kicker that went 5-7 on fgs, can boom punts, and kick it deep. With time his leg will get stronger and he will be kicking in to the endzone. We also redshirted the #1punter in the country. We don't need to give this boy a scholly unless he walks on and earns it. JMHO.
Palardy doesnt Boom punts, and he never kicks it deep, I dont think he had 1 touchback all year. Look at FSU last night. There defense comes on the field at the 20 everytime because Hopkins booms it through the end zone every time. If we can acquire a weapon that allows us to save 8-15 yards every time we kick off I'd take him

Dude, I don't think this is breaking news, but the staff didn't want him to kick it into the endzone. Notice how they all go to the far side of one hash or the other? That, my friend, is by design. And we had some of the best kickoff coverage in the nation. And yes, he was killing punts. Accuracy and distance.
The staff didnt want him to kick it into the end zone? Are you serious? If Palardy could get it there, and get some touchbacks the staff would take that instead of having Janzen Jackson and other starters waste energy on kickoffs
