So why not just recruit faster LBs?

That would be ideal, but some kids are suited for the move.

I think Tino will stay in the secondary though. He will beef up to some extent in a college weight room, but to me, his frame may not allow for enough to get him to a SEC size LB.

I think we will be able to notice who is going to be playing what position (LB or DB) for a little while now. We are going to be switching to the 3-4 which requires some larger LBs. (hence we have Harris, Johnson. 2 good sized LBs already).

I disagree that we'll be switching to a 3-4. I think with Wilcox as the D coordinator we'll be multiple, and we'll use some 3-4, but our base will remain a 4-3. Our D recruits so far are, for the most part, versatile guys that can play in multiple schemes... which is what the coaches are looking for.

Did someone officially announce that UT was going to the 3-4?

DB's are converted to LB for several reasons. One, many aren't quite fast enough to be DB's on the college level but plenty fast enough to play LB. Two, they are more accustomed to pass coverage than most HS LB's. Three, it is near impossible to make a HS LB alot faster. It is very common to put 20-30 lbs on a HS DB without giving up much speed. Four, HS LB's are often like C Donald- they make their name blitzing but cannot learn to play in space.

There are probably more that can be listed.

Yes right now we want to be multiple, but out base WILL be a 3-4. We wont stay 3-4 for everyplay of course, so in that sense we will be multiple. bbut this Comes from players.

Memory tells me that it was specifically said by CDD that we WERE NOT going to base 3-4. Everyone else tends to disagree. Maybe it's changed.

We do.... and move them to DE's :)

The obsession comes from Chavis' obsession with converting HS secondary players and RB's to LB's... Obviously this happened long before Chavis, but he was particularly well-known for doing this.

I think I know the comments you are talking about.

He was specifically referring to not going to it this year, because of the shortage of big d-lineman. Its safe to assume that extends until next year, barring some serious JUCO D-lineman catches.

As a general rule, I believe both he and Wilcox prefer the 3-4. I don't have a specific comment to back that up.

When they announced the Wilcox hire, Dooley stated that the base defense would be a "40."

Yes, he also said that in his initial press confernce, but both of those questions were also in reference to this year's defense.

I'm not saying that they are going to run a 3 - 4 in the future. I doubt they have decided. What you can run is highly dependent on the guys you have, and Dooley's only had 1/2 of a recruiting class, and Wilcox got here afterward.

But Wilcox has favored mutliple looks in the past, and that its easier to do out of a 3 - 4 without personnel shifts. And Dooley is from a coaching tree that currently favors the 3 - 4. So its fair to speculate we may see a 3 -4 in the future, and the recruits we are going after sure look like they would like to run one.

Wilcox does run a multiple, however his base at Boise was a 3-4, and I would expect him to set it up here that way

If we are going to be multiple, we are going to have to learn how to get the right number of players on and off the field first. :D

Lol, I think at a random time every game, when the other team is at midfield Dooley/Wilcox should run Jaques Smith on the field after the ball is snapped to lay a hit on the opposing QB in the same fashion he did to King in the GA game. If nothing else the other team will think we are crazy and start contemplating having a guy watch the sidelines every offensive play.

Where do you guys keep getting the idea that Wilcox's Boise St. base D was a 3-4? They were very multiple but their base used a 4 man front (4-3 or 4-2-5 in 2009). I highly doubt that we are switching to a 3-4.

Wilcox knows a variety of different schemes and defensive fronts. Boise ran a variety of 3 and 4 man fronts with Wilcox. He ran a 3-2-6 against TCU during the fiesta bowl last year.

Can you let it go? We all know about the misque. That's one of the least problems we have.

This...I watched several of their games from 09 and they were in a 4-2-5 nearly all of the time.

“It was awesome,” Thomas said about his first Rocky Top experience. “I loved the crowd, I loved the atmosphere, and the Vol Walk everything was perfect.”

“They already treat me like family,” Thomas said. “They treat me with a lot of respect and are always asking me about how my life is going, on and off the field.”

Thomas was here for the Ole Miss game.
