They still want to play in the NFL one day.

Smith has only worked with players who are already there. He has no experience getting players from college to the NFL at this point. I'll wait until I see how he does in that department before I anoint him a legend. Looks like recruits are taking the same approach.

He still knows what it takes to make it to the NFL. Like you said he coached them, more importantly, he lived it.

If you are 17 or 24 for that matter you still want to learn from a coach that can teach you the techniques to improve your skills. If you are 24 you should be further along in your development so you are refining your technique. If you are 17 then you may have to learn more of the technique and more of the mental aspects of the game but you are still learning. Chuck Smith has proven he can coach and has coached non NFL players at his camps in the past. If you don't think Chuck Smith can coach 17 year olds you are way off base.

He still has to be able to sell his knowledge to recruits. He has to convince them to take a chance on a new staff instead of going to play for proven winners like Saban and Meyer. Only time will tell if he sinks or swims.

On another note, I'm simply making a point. I have never said that CCS was a legend in recruiting, or will be an amazing coach. Time will tell. In that respect, I agree with you.

Agreed. At any rate, many recruits have been quoted saying they love CCS because he has "been there, done that." They know he has seen it all. They have also been quoted saying that he is very personable and he can relate to them. That's huge when a young man will be taken out of his comfort zone and thrown into a top D1 football program that is far from home.

The two biggest factors for you are distance and CCS?

I think playing time, relationship with more than one coach, his visit, etc. come into play here as well.

Distance is an excellent selling point with a kid from Asheville. It doesn't hurt that several UT greats have come from WNC.

UH NO.

He had worked with some of the top highschool lineman in the country. They paid him to work out and learn from him at his camp.
Also worked with the top college lineman as well and helped them develop their game.

When you are 17-18 yrs old you are going to like hearing how your potential coach is requested by players they hope to be one day. Like you said he's coached players that have already made it. Well those 17-18 yr old want to be "those" players that have made it. And to go against your argument do you consider taking draftees anywhere from the 1st - 5th rd and making sure they are at the very peak when they get to the next level nothing to brag about. Face it dude the man is well respected as a DL coach/developer and is sought after by many top athletes to elevate their game. I'll take it.

sooo you're saying that a recruit would rather be coached by someone who has coached at the college level and brought players to the nfl, than to actually be coahced by someone who has coached in the NFL?? That seems quite stupid....

So by your logic coaching in the NFL means nothing to highschool kids because the players are already talented. Wrong.

If Wilcox keeps running a 4-3 I could see him being a decent linebacker

Any one heard anything new on this kids commitment to FL? I still think he would be happy here and develop under CCS. What are the odds he gives us another look? I know I like him in orange.

Is the glass always half empty?

SGMVols is one of the worst and in many cases most ignorant posters on this forum. Not because he is negative, because I am often negative as well, but because he states things as fact without having any knowledge whatsoever of the actual facts. I would say that he and CodyG would be 1a and 1b.

SGM was one of the best posters on here all of last season...

I think Kiffin leaving really warped his opinion of all things UT football though
