'11 FL RB Tom Smith - UT Signee

noone did anything but arm tackle. did not see a single instance of him pulling a move on someone, he just tried to run by them which may work against some linebackers but no db in the sec. lacks top end speed. The reason for this may be that his stride is not very long at all. he does have good vision but most of his carries came out of either the spread or the wildcat and my opinion on those formations is not approving. and his first step is hesitant, which causes him to lose some balance from the start which inhibits him from doing what he is really capable of. i want to see a running back take a decisive first step, hit the hole, and then accelerate and finish the run.
I guess you missed where he blew through 3 guys or where he carried 3 or 4 guys about 10 yards before they got him out of bounds. And this isn't 3A in Tennesssee. This is one of the best classifications in the entire country. He may lack top end speed and elite lateral quickness, but he's still a pretty damn good back.

That's what coaches get paid to teach.

3 arm tackles.

exageration. 1 guy who came in high and at a bad angle.

he is decent. i just didnt think he was a take at this point.

yeah high school coaches. seriously a kid who is going to be a senior next year should know about the first step thing. but the top end speed is not something you teach.

Then become a high school coach and churn out 5 star prospects for Tennessee.

Thanks in advance

Smith is good one guys. He's a kid that not a lot of people might know about but without question one of the top big backs in Florida. I'll give a full breakdown once I wrap up this story.

Michael L.

If anyone knows, he does.

I would rather have a punishing, run your butt over, back than a finesse runner, who tries to jook everyone out of their shoes. Power run game needs the hard runners to get the 3 to 4 yards. You cant break every run for 30 yards

this is true. i would also like to have that back but running through arm tackles does not qualify someone as a "run your butt over" back. It also helps to have a little variety to your game.

Negative people can shove it.

1. This is a quality prospect and looks very good on film against very good competition.
2. This is a commit from a powerhouse program in Florida.
3. This is a commit from a powerhouse program in Florida.

Who cares who is offers are right now. Any bets on him getting multiple BCS offers now? Kid will see his offer list grow now.

best. post. today.

I read a review on the kid on another post that is fairly accurate. Vols strength and conditioning CBW can help with cutting and flexibility. Other coaching will help as well. CDD and staff believe this playeer fits into their system and offensive schemes.

Bottom line - the kid moves the chains and with his running style and strongly tends to go forward when hit.

With players like this you don't necessarily know what position they might end up once they're in the program.

Did I forget to mention that he averages over 7 yds/carry?

It's kind of scary how similar he runs to Montario hardesty. They have very similoar run styles.

From VQ article :

:salute:

and we've got two threads worth of pple complaining. U guys never cease to amaze me.

Who would want to come to UT and play for a bunch of ungrateful fans like some on here?

If dude is willing to give his all for Tennessee every time he puts on the uni, then I welcome him.

Yeah, I don't get it.

We're in for tough times, that's just how it is. It sucks that we got shafted by our previous two coaches, one by negligence, and one by being a royal a-hole, but it's time to just step up to the table and play the cards we've been dealt. This kid is a good looking football player at a position that (if Bryce came back especially) we have pretty good potential at for the next couple of seasons.

If he only had offers from Tulane and La Tech and FIU, I could understand *some* skepticism. But Pittsburgh and Wisconsin have put quality RB's on the field for several years now and they're right there with us in the offer list. Other schools in Florida are still after some top tier RB talent but it really doesn't make this kid a scrub and a walk-on level leftover.

With those measurables and the right coaching (which is honestly to be determined, but I'm granting the benefit of the doubt without getting hammered on the Koolaid like I did last year), he's a guy who could see the field for the University of Tennessee, and that can never be a bad thing.

This...we're essentilly operating under a self-imposed scholarhip limit. With having to replace an entire offensive line, QB, and RB, with little depth on the OL/DL, it could be a rough ride. Time will only overcome this.

On the other hand, our players know that there are low expectations out there. Do you think the Vols don't know this? The players we have are fighters and deserve our support.

Win today or else will not work in our current predicament.
