'11 FL RB Marlin Lane

Wow that's a substantial drop. Do you think he would have qualified as a 5 star talent before the injury? His film looked really good. Arm tackles don't bring him down that's for sure.

I don't have any idea. I never look at kids film ro anything like that. I don't evaluate at all just leave that to staff.

I've not seen where anyone has said he would have been. He was not in class of a Dyer or Lattimore from what I can gather.

Rivals compares him to Arian Foster

I always thought rivals comparisons were who the people looked like.

Lattimore is on another level than Dyer. Dyer got a lot of yards because of Cam Newton. We'll see what he does this year coming up. Lane can be just as good if not better than Dyer if he's completely back.

Dyer also wasn't the featured back the entire year, and still finished 5th in rushing yards in the SEC on just 182 carries.

I don't care what anyone thinks, this is a huge pick up. He will be back to 100% and reeking havoc on SEC defenses.

And he will be playing with a huge chip on his shoulder.

Lane will see game reps early in his career here.

I agree totally with that. He's gonna prep that knee w/ our training staff, get in cardio shape, sling some iron around and be too hard to handle. When he was 100% there wasn't a better running back in the south. Even at his speed now he runs a db-speed shuttle.

Lane struggled this year after coming back from his knee injury, gaining just under 5 yards per carry on limited carries (he split time at tailback with '12 prospect Mookie Lee). He averaged 7.4 YPC as a junior and 11 YPC his sophomore year.

He's still no Lattimore. He racked up a lot of yards against terrible defenses. He ran well in the NC game but that was the only big game I remember.

Asked to update the status of his verbal commitment to the Tigers, Lane replied, "You can keep it the same … it's 100-percent."

LOLZ

I have never seen Lane or film on him but from talking to some who have seen him healthy, he is definitely one of the best in the nation.

I am very pleased with how our RB class has turned out. For those of you that have knowledge for big time Florida football, how do our RB prospects match up against the best in the state? Bellamy, Lane, Allen, Hart, C Buie, A Buie, Blakely, Freeman, Smith? How would you stack them up?

A lot of what is said here isn't really accurate. He averaged 10 per carry his jr year. ML didnt see the field until I think it was week 6 of this season. He tore his acl in the playoffs last year so he is really only 13 months removed from the initial injury. It wasn't that he split carries with Mookie more of being eased back in and not playing much rb until really late in the season. I spent my entire Summer working with Marlin and others and I can assure the kid is the real deal. His training regiment is unreal, high character, natural leader, unbelievably gifted athlete (ML will have the strongest arm on the roster at Tenn), and the ideal every down type back you want in the SEC. He will be able to carry 218-220 lbs and maintain his explosiveness and agility. He also possesses the tools to be a gifted wr but will likely not be looked at to do so. The thoughts of this being a long term health issue I dont feel it is a concern. He has healed well and should have the ability to go all out for the Vols this season.

First of all thanks JimmyD for all the information. It is really reassuring to hear that Marlin's injury isn't that serious from someone who actually has personally trained him. It sounds like he will be an elite RB for UT the next few years. Very encouraging to hear.

Secondly, Lane surely can't have a stronger arm than Bray, can he? :)

Thanks for all the info JimmyD.

Are we just happy that a 4* RB committed...or is he really a good player? I know nothing about him.

His injury scares me a little......

I read somewhere yesterday that he could be a great slot guy, and that his HS team used him there occ.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the team played him at slot when he first returned from his injury to ease him back into football condition. RB is obviously a more physical/contact prone position than slot would be so I believe they started him off there to get him back into the swing of things until he was ready for the RB position.

He's an elite player if he's healthy. Dooley's taking a very high reward gamble on Lane being able to return to pre-injury form. ACL/MCL science has come a good ways over the past few years....the knee should be fine, it's his mind that will be the concern.

I remember in a thread about a year ago, regarding the RB's coming up for the 2011 class, one of the boards resident florida guru's said something like Marlin Lane might be the best back in the country this year. Of course, at the time we weren't even on his radar. Anyone remember who posted that?

Lane saw his first action of the season in Mainland's 4th game (Seminole).

Thanks Jimmy D.
I agree flowd82, this is reassuring news.
Sounds like it is more a mental thing now...working with S&C CRM and Vol practice should build/improve ML's confidence in the knee BUT the real test (of ML's confidence) will come during the first couple of "O" series of his first college game...his reaction to planting, cutting, tackles, and direct hits to that area.
Wish him well.
