I hate that even more. I get so mad when these kids have scholly to a top notch school and they blow it because they can't get their priorities straight.

Says a lot for the state of the public school systems in America. We lag so far behind in some areas its pathetic. On top of that, teachers' hands are tied because they are forced to teach to pass the tests, not to expand the learning capabilities of their students.

The dumbing down of America aka No Child Left Behind

It's a lot more than just that. You're scratching the surface of all the problems in our education system. Ask anyone who has done TFA in a large city. It can be awful.

But you're right. It is definitely pathetic in some areas.

To add to this. The city of Atlanta is now dealing with the biggest cheating scandal in the history of this country. Education is no longer a priority for this country anymore, its a da*n shame too.

I'm amazed that people are surprised and shocked to hear of cheating scandals going on... If you put in place a policy like No Child Left Behind, tell schools/teachers that this is the new metric and that poor scoring can result in reduction of funds/loss of job, what the hell do you think is going to happen????

I am no fan of NCLB or any other Federal involvement in education... however, blaming the standard for people cheating is ridiculous. Do you blame laws against shoplifting when kids try to steal from stores too?

We need school choice (vouchers) so that schools like those get weeded out for producing a bad product just like any other business.

Not that ridiculous. NCLB incentivizes cheating by putting a premium on test scores. Shoplifting laws don't do anything.

No, we don't need vouchers. And a better analogy than the shoplifting one you used is the use of steroids among minor league baseball players.... If your income requires you to reach X goal, and if the system is not in place to deter you from "cheating" to reach X goal, then I can't blame the person for doing so..... In fact, maybe that isn't a good example bc a minor league baseball player is responsible for whether or not he reaches X goal, whereas with NCLB, you can have george feeney himself teach in some of our inner city public schools and he will still get a poor review....

NCLB signifies what is screwed up with policy today. Its metric looks only at end result. How can you measure the effectiveness of a teacher at the end of a school year without first measuring the stidents at the beginning of the school year?

Of a 5th grade students comes in at a 1st grade level, and by the end of the year is at a 3rd grade level, the teacher has made great progress, even though NCLB still sees it as under achieving....

Agree

Call me naive but whatever happened to your CONSCIOUS keeping you from cheating? Whatever happened to integrity? A cheater is about one and a half steps above a thief, IMO JMO..

As a teacher, I agree 100 percent with this viewpoint and have used this argument in the past myself.

The general feeling among teachers in the APS was cheat or get fired. Their conscious told them that they needed a paycheck.
