'11 CA RB Brendan Bigelow

His commitment to Washington is ultra soft... Cal has been in the driver's seat for a while.

Getting his visit certainly only helps your chances.

He's also supposed to visit Oregon when we host Washington later, accompanied by his teammate 3* WR BJ Kelley - who LOVES Oregon and would likely commit if given the chance.

The version of the story I heard was that almost everyone expected him to switch from Washington to Cal prior to his injury. After the injury, Cal backed off and Washington remained strong so he feels loyal to them. He also has family in the Seattle area.

Interesting... I had not heard anything about Cal being scurred by the injury.

I know this is not the pros, but do they get some physical, doctor's statement or anything to determine if he is actually totally recovered before the commitment is final and signed?

It is highly unlikely that Tennessee would take Bigelow without talking to the orthopedic surgeon that did the knee repair to get not only his current condition but also a prognosis on how much of a recovery is likely and how long it might take to reach a full recovery -- if ever.

Of course that leaves two problems -- one is that the prognosis may not be accurate and the eventual outcome could be better or worse than the prognosis. The second problem is that even if the physical outcome is great, the psychological effects of two different injuries and surgeries on the same knee could be hard to overcome. He could be physically fine but not have the confidence to play full speed and without worrying about his knee.

So yes, the kid would be a big gamble, but some due diligence with the surgeon could go a long ways to reducing that risk and a potential redshirt year could give him more time to recover psychologically.

I suspect Dooley is covering all the bases.

Tennessee would take Bigelow in a heartbeat imo. We will have 6 RBs on campus next year not counting him. He is worth the risk/reward.

LV,
Are the coaches allowed to ask a recruit such as Bigelow to be evaluated by one of the team ortho's?

IDK for sure but I would think that you can't preform any kind of physical evaluation on the kid. The kid's orthopedic doctor is under no obligation to release anything to the team.

As far as the ACL and how much it could effect him going forward, it would depend on how severe the tear. Was it a complete or partial tear? Did it involve an avulsion of the bone? How was it repaired initially? Generally you're looking at two years before an athlete completely returns to 100% after an ACL tear though.

Check that, I went back and found the story and it says Washington stuck with him after his first injury. So I don't know if Cal has backed off or not. He's visiting them later this year so I guess there is still some interest.

I would take the risk and take him IMO

No doubt, he's a definite take. Like others have said, no one will be asking him to come in and contribute immediately. He can red shirt and get back to 100%.

His highlights are crazy... Some of those runs reminded me of Bryce Brown's HS film <flame suit on/>.

SIAP, but how's his HS competition?

Holy crap, this kid outruns everyone, even if they have the angle on him. If he gets to 100% again I think he will be a nightmare for almost any defense. Someone should include him somewhere on the rock painting just in case.

Watch this kid's video. I would take the risk. Blazing speed and gifted vision.

YouTube - Brendon Bigelow

wow he looks awesome on film. def not a 25 carry a game grind it out guy, but hes a homerun threat everytime he touches the ball....in other words, just what the doctor ordered. Tom Smith or Neal to pound it, and Bigelow to break a big one and the defense's spirit.

Hopefully he can come back from the knee injury, i'm sure the full time help of a professional training staff and weight training program will be beneficial.

Just have to convince him that knoxville is the right place for him.

Reminds me of Jahvid Best. Anyone else think so?

I really hope we can get this guy.

At this point he looks to be a little better pure RB than Jahvid his senior year. In his highlights Best just ran around everyone without worrying about his blocking (which he was very good at by the way, not saying he wasn't) JMO
