$100 A Barrel Oil is on the Way

I'm curious myself on what the actual efficacy of the conversion to usable gasoline is. The Rand Co figure was for "barrels of sythetic petroleum". I do wonder what that really means in gallons available at the pump.

Well..they will lose at least a third I would think when they go from the oil from shale to the syngas. I'm not sure what the efficiency of Fischer Tropsch is, but it probably isn't too bad. I'm not sure where Rand calls it synthetic petroleum, but I would guess it would be following Fischer Tropsch. Does that sound right? If so, then the gallons at the pump would be determined from the conversion of the FT product into gasoline. As far as energy efficiency, this probably isn't horrible - but if you measure efficiency as volume of gasoline per volume of synthetic petroleum, then we have to be talking about a bad ratio, I would think.

The area in Utah and Colorado where the oil shale is located is a mostly barren area, sparsely populated. I doubt environmentalists will oppose it, for the sames reasons they didn't oppose the oil wells in West Texas.

the area of ANWR that contains the oil is barren and definitely sparsely populated. The pictures you see of verdant tundra filled with cavorting caribou are lies perpetrated by the environmental lobby.

Radical environmentalists oppose EVERY possible way of exploiting our own oil reserves. Why? because they see mankind as a lecherous mistake foisted upon the natural world.

IMO you overestimate their political influence. Most Americans are wholeheartedly in favor of developing the oil shale in Utah.

On a sidenote, oil hit $110/barrel today. Can $4/gal gas be far off?

really? then why aren't we drilling in ANWR and in the Gulf Coast areas? Why hasn't there been a refinery built in over 30 years?

What politicians do, and what the majority of Americans want done, are often 2 different things (unfortunately).

I bought a bicycle today. Everyone else will just continue to moan and complain...

I ride a bike and take the train (which is electric), so I don't get hit by prices at the pump. I am more concerned about these oil prices and how it affects every product we buy...
