It took Tennessee from 1998, after which Tennessee went into a slow recruiting and performance decline, until Kiffin arrived to get The Vols supposedly back on track. Then Kiffin almost immediately leaves with things in a total and complete mess. Dooley arrives, only weeks before signing day, with no hope of a signing class. Two more years pass and now some fans are trashing Dooley for not having already completely turned around a Vol football that it took nearly 10 years to nearly destroy. It may take 5 or 6 years to get this program back to its consistent winning ways, patience with Derek Dooley will be rewarded. For impatience we will pay a very heavy price.

Funny how you guys keep saying that we need patience...My patience has run out...Tell me something, how is it other coaches can go to other schools an take on teams in despair an suddenly make them winners?...When Saban went to bama he ran off half the team and went 7-6 his first year...Next year he went 11-2 an the rest is history....You got Hoke at Michigan who inherited a complete mess and in his FIRST season he took them to a BCS bowl and won by the way...Jim Mora at UCLA inherited a disaster and has them at 4-1 right now...Are you figuring it out yet??...It all comes down to COACHING...All these excuses of "He needs more time" and he has them going in the right direction and I'm so glad we only lost by 7 today and feel good because they didn't quit is bulls**t...Moral victories are for teams like Vandy...Dooley is a bad bad coach...Hell of a nice guy and a classy one at that and he would make a super AD but he is just not a good football coach...The results speak for themselves.

Fulmer had 6 seasons of 9-10 wins between 98 and when he was booted. There was alot of good football played during that time. To say it was a steady decline is just not accurate. Fulmer was a winner. Comparing anything he did to where Tennessee football is now is just a fan searching for an excuse.

Good post, it has taken Spurrier 7 years to build a program
Spurrier had a stellar record as a college HC, which bought him those 7 years worth of patience.

When you are unqualified to coach La Tech and somehow land a job at a major university in the SEC, you don't have the same equity Spurrier, Saban or Meyer does.

Um...what? The Vols were one half from playing for a national championship in 2001. To say we declined immediately after the 1998 season is silly.

It wasn't screwed up over the course of 10 years. I mean, Tennessee should have had a shot at the National Championship in 2001 and had multiple seasons ending New Year's Day bowl victories between 1998 and 2004.

In the last 4 years of Fulmer's tenure, it was a combo of his losing his edge and better competition (Richt, Miles, Saban, Meyer) entering the SEC.

I had patience. When we lost to Wyoming, I had patience. I begged for another year for CPF to see what he could do. But oh hell no. He was "lazy", "the game passed him by", it was "time for him to go". So he was shown the door.

So you want patience? Well f__k your patience.

True... I don't think anybody ever thought spurrier would turn USCjr into the program it is today. I sure didn't. But Dooley is going to have to start winning some big games in order to be able to recruit at the level required to compete in the SEC. So far he's 0-12 in big games, so he's not making a case for himself to recruits.

Even conceding for argument that things were fine under Fulmer, the complete mess this program was in with Kiffin midnight departure is fact. Perhaps a "big time" hire when Kiffin left could have moved things along, maybe not, who knows and at this point it is a worthless discussion. We hired Derek Dooley and to think about replacing him after 3 years, throwing things in turmoil yet again would be the act of a genuine fool.

Neither UCLA nor Michigan...play in the SEC. Big difference! This is a tough league.:)

How many more years do you think we should give DD.

UCLA and Michigan have both beaten ranked teams under their new staffs.....more than Dooley can say.

Well let's see... saban- best coach and recruiter in college football. Coaches at one of the most storied schools in history.pretty easy to build a powerhouse quickly
Hoke- didn't have a clue who he was when hired. Hasn't really had to use his recruits yet. Playing with richrods talent. Has arguably the most dynamic player in the country at qb. I will say he looks to be a good recruiter. Michigan got MAN HANDLED by bama if u recall. Michigan is a great program but as of now would be on tennessees level in sec. Big ten is terrible.
Mora- say what you want but they have alot of talent and play in the pac 12. Have a wealth of talent in so cal. Usc can't get them all. The jury is out if he can recruit. Hell, the jury is out on him. Hasn't had success since he left atlanta. Wouldn't want him as our coach.
Dooley- unproven. Never won a big game. Above average to good recruiter. Smart guy and decent coach. He may not be the answer but he is building a pretty good team. I think his biggest problem is motivating the team. He's to analytical sometimes. I've seen
improvement this year. Don't love him
but don't hate him either. Needs 1-2 more
Years to prove if he can coach in this league.
I've watched UT football over 20 years. I've never felt this disappointed in our team as I have the last few years. Point im making is dooleys not great but I and alot of others may agree that he's better than 2 of the 3 coaches you mentioned. Grass isn't always greener. If we fire Dooley this season then you may as well get ready for 4 or 5 years of more disappointment... Go Vols and hey, at least we wont lose next week...

This Tennessee, not a perennial loser like South Carolina. You could give Dooley 100 years and he is not correcting South Carolina.

It actually should be easier to recruit at South Carolina than Tennessee, though. Especially when you're Spurrier and have a proven history of being a good recruiter. There is a lot of high school talent in South Carolina, much more than Tennessee.

it took saban 2 years to win a national championship at alabama, this is the 3rd year dooley has been here and he hasnt beat a ranked team yet, if it wasnt for vandy last year we wouldnt have even had an sec win. do we have an sec win this year? dooley isnt saban and never will be, im not comparing the two..im just saying that a good coach shouldnt need this long to turn a program around that is consistantly in the top 15 in recruiting. just like we had to take a timeout because they only had 9 people on the field when ga was going for a 2 point conversion, i mean where have we seen that before.

Hart needs to start shopping now. Dooley has talent here but he will never get them to perform to their full potential. This job has to be more desirable than when Kiffin left. Pieces are here but the chessmasters are not. Charlie Strong would be at the top of my list if I were heart.
