10 Players from TN each year?

I was listening to Doug Matthews this morning on The Zone and he was talking about CBJ and recruiting. About three weeks ago, Doug didn't seem to high on the hire, but this morning he said that everything CBJ had done so far seemd to be the right moves. Especially reaching out to former players, coachs, the media, and in state high schools. He then went on to talk about the increase in talent level in Tennessee, and that he expects CBJ to sign around 10 players each year from this state. I'm not against it, but that number seemed high to me. I can't remember that last time we signed that many in state kids. Thoughts?

Why does there have to be an arbitrary quota on instate kids? Grab the ones who will be an asset on Saturdays and rep UT well. Wish the others well and let them go where they will. It's that simple.

For a while, Tennessee didn’t produce a lot of good players.

Now it is.

It could keep on, or it could stop.

10 players from in-state is only a target, as you go for team needs and scheme fit. Coachspeak. Perfectly doable as long as you aren’t dogmatic about it.

10 players seems high but as long as they're good players it would be great to build that kind of core. In state folks theoretically should care more about UT and could possibly help shape the vibe of the locker room.

This. One year there might be 10 - 12+, not often though, and some years there may only be 5. Go hard after the ones who should be very productive in the SEC year after year.

well for the past two years Tennessee has had near 10 four star recruits or better. so its not to out there. plus i think last years draft had 8 players drafted and that pretty good if you get all of those players on the same team.....

again we are letting people who want you money to sign up for their thought on who is 4 star or 5 star if you all will send me 19.95 i will make a list for you. i think we need to let the coaches bring in who the see that will help us

Tennessee is fertile recruiting grounds currently. Next year will be even better. Ten per year and we return to the BO again.

I agree with this and have been a proponent for decades. It got lost during the later years of the Fulmer tenure when he got lazy and has never returned. Tennessee HS players and coaches need to be paid attention to because I assure you other programs are in the form of all of the rest of the SEC plus other conferences.

But then somebody needs to fire Cheek and Martin, and the BOT needs to get some guts for it to work the way it should. if Vandy can adjust their qualifications to bring in more top players UT should as well. This top research university crap is killing the golden goose. It is a land grant and needs to get back to taking care of Tennessee students first and foremost.

Nashville is now on the map. And there to stay.

The state is slowly trending upward in terms of the number of SEC-caliber football players that it is producing. 10 Tennessee boys per recruiting class is probably achievable, but it will require truly locking down the state, something that is easier said than done. It is, however, definitely time to stop this exodus of Tennessee boys to USC, Notre Dame, Alabama and elsewhere.

I understand your point, but disagree. Many players in the past have come from other states and been great players and leaders for UT. Then they leave the state once their college career is over and are great ambassadors elesewhere.

pretty sure he means scholarship level players - half of your list isnt even on scholly

there are easy 15 takes in the state of TN this year, and 10 that could play just about anywhere - i know some will want to go out of state but there is a lot of talent in state this year - Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com Ranking - Rivals.com Tennessee Preseason Top 25 2013

A couple of weeks ago, Doug was on the Wake Up Crew with Mark, Frank, and Kevin. He said that the state of Tennessee is now producing more SEC level players than ever before because our population is growing. He did say that the state of Tennessee is and should be producing 10-12 SEC level players every year. He said that Nashville area alone accounts for about 6 of these SEC caliber players alone. That is not to say that Tennessee should sign every one of them. However, I would hope that we sign a good 5-6 players from Tennessee every year.

if anyone is interested i believe these are the ones that are scholly players who will be on team next year

Drae Bowles, Devrin Young, J. Smith, james Stone, Tiny, Kerbyson, eric gordon, cody Blanc, Greg King, Bullard, Brendan downs, Jacob Carter, Joseph Ayres, Daniel Hood, & Mack Crowder

Bullard, Stone, Tiny are all going to start on one of the best OL in the country

Dhood, Kerby, egordon, crowder, downs, Jsmith will likely be in 2 deep

Dbowles could very well be a starter

so 10 out of 15 will contribute - 3 will def start and 2 more could easily end up starting (bowles and jsmith)

Good point. Just because UT wants them does not mean they want UT. That is where Jones must make up ground. He must also pick the few plums Southeast Tn provides which used to be automatic UT commitments.

I think most people under estimate the quality of high school football players in the state of Tennessee. Used to anybody that was any good wanted to come to UT but now that doesn't seem to be as much the case. Jones has to get it back to being that way! any kid growing up in the state of Tennessee should want to wear the orange. I think the quality of high school players continues to get better in the state

If we get the top ten players from Tennessee every year, we will have a solid base on which to build with players from the surrounding States. It would be a move in the right direction.

You build a great high school program by building great youth programs. Although he can recruit nationally, Coach is choosing to build Tennessee football from the ground up by giving them a goal. "If I can be one of the top 10 in the state..." will be on the mind of many talented in-state prospects in weight rooms this off-season. I love the statement, and I love that he threw a number out there. BUJO is fighting and winning some major psychological battles. Impressive
