'10 P Matt Darr (signed with Tennessee)

I have said since I saw Palardy play Byrnes that he is a better punter than kicker. The punt where he was in the back of his endzone and he backed the returner up to inside his own 40 blew my mind.

then hopefully darr is great at sticking it inside the 10 yard line.... it's a good problem to have... i just wish we had the same problem at several positions

Coach Dooley said that there will be an open competition for the spot, and that Palardy can battle for the punting duties. What do you think the chances are of him doing all 3 next year? You have to think that he is going to be suing that leg a lot...any chance he beats Darr out in practice, yet doesn't get the job fro this reason?

There was a poster on here that has watched Palardy at practice and said he is booming the kicks with alot of hang time. We will find out soon....

How do you know palardy is a better punter

Palardy's average was 47 yds... and Palardy's technique is better than Darr's. I have watched them both. Darr alligator arms the ball on the drop, and that makes for insconsistent drop postion of the ball. Palardy, stretches arms to full length, and the drop is always the same, consistent. I have seen him do it, put him in the back of the end zone, and you have a very good chance of the ball crossing the 50 yd linedown to the 40...that would be a gross of 60 -70 yds...that translates into much better field position than most punters I have ever seen! How about you? My son has kicked with Palardy on Sundays for the last 2 years...Palardy is a freak! Here are some things people don't know about him. He is an amazing athlete! He is fast, has an amazing arm (can throw the ball on a rope or for touch), catches like a wide receiver, can jump, and his kicking skills are fun to watch. When he hits it right whether he is kicking or punting the ball is in the air for a long time and travels amazing distances.

I don't doubt anything you've mentioned about Palardy, but from what I've read it sounds like Darr is similarly multi-talented & athletic. He is the 2 time California HS State Champ in Shotput and also won the Discus last year. From the article (link below) sounds like he may have repeated in the Discus this year had he not been suffering from a hernia.

Either way, it is a wonderful problem for our special teams coach to have. It should be a lot of fun to see who ends up winning all 3 of the kicking jobs.
:good!:

The only reason I favor Palardy as a punter is the lefty thing. Lefty punters seem to be harder for most return guys to field .... in the air or off the turf. I was looking forward to that "backwards" spin causing a few fumbles here and there for our opponents.

Love getting the best in the country. Welcome, Matt!

Vols have outkicked their coverage on kickers. :p
