'10 JUCO QB Matt Simms

you are very likely right with that statement. they don't feel they have great choices. certainly nothing close to their model is available... they need a game manager with nothing close to elite available

It wasn't the best year to have to land a stud QB. Not many guys that are going to have early success in this class. Getting a guy with good upside like Bray was the only option. They know Bray isn't going to be ready to lead this team by fall practice next year. They have no choice but to bring in someone that will be legitimate competition for Nick Stephens if not the favorite to win the job.

Anointing a guy the starter before he sets foot on campus would not accomplish what they were trying to do at the position. Too bad for Cam. It just wasn't a fit.

I believe he has already been offered and is waiting to end of the week as a formality. Simms, QB type and behavior (last game) make him our QB of 2010/11.

All I saw was a QB throw some short passes with no pressure and one good option pitch. What is so impressive about that Youtube video?

if he's as good at football as he is at rolling doobies then we should be fine.

Upon closer inspection, it appears they've got the wrong Matt.

Naw sab, I think LV is right. Looks like a flavored Goose, IMO. Consider how there's oragne and cranberry juice mixers beside it.

I really don't want to have to root for a Simms...

Are you even listening to youself when you post?...
Excuse me...but when I need your permission to voice my opinion, I'll ask 4 it...you have your perspective. I have mine. Everybody here has a differing take in one way or the other...therefore, don't come at me with some high-minded smart@$$ comment like "Have you listened to yourself." You're in no position to be dictating what's truth and what's fiction around here. Much of this process has yet to be played out and even the coaches don't fully know what to expect of these recruits.

I personally don't see Simms as a starter this fall...not the next season. He may surprise me (as Crompton did most of us against UGA). But Cam Newton seemed to me to be the most ready to step in and take command of the offense this fall.

Cam would have every opportunity to win the job if he stayed at UF, and I happen to view him as a major upgrade from what we've had the past few years. However, with Simms, I don't know that he's an upgrade from Stephens or Lamaison...much less Bray.

if we offer it means they feel he is best option they have
I don't know about that, Larry. It seems to me to be a move to hedge their bets this year...not that they are expecting Simms to be a starter.

Like all of us, they don't yet know what they have in Bray. He may come in with a great work ethic, and show them what they're looking for early on, this Spring. I don't see Simms as offering much more than what they have in Bray, other than the name.

Someone mentioned a quote from Orgeron in the book, "Meat Market"...about Simms being overhyped coming out of HS, because of his name only...and that he was no better than some of the average recruits out there.

I think Newton was/is our best shot at having a dangerous offense next fall. If Simms is chosen instead, I will be hoping for Bray to come on with it.

I would hope your desire would be that all QBs on the roster would "come on with it." I don't have a preference for which quarterback wins the job but want as good a play from that person as we can get. I trust the staff will put the best one on the field be that Bray or Simms or Stephens or Lamaison, assuming all are still here.

I'm sure you want the best on the field come next fall.

so, what are the chances neither QB impressed our coaches? no better looking than NS or NL, would they take one of them anyway? doesn't sound like CLK's M.O. if that were the case, and bray wasn't "ready" by next year, are we screwed? and how do we even know that they would sign with us even if we offered? from what i understand there were other schools evaluating them too.

and imo, that pic of simms doesn't look like other pics i've seen of him.

Here's the deal:
The staff wants/needs somebody to push Nick Stephens in the spring, and is not sure a true freshman (actually a high school senior at that point) or NL will be ready to do it. Simms is more seasoned than NL, having spent a year and a half at Louisville, and now a year in JC; plus he has the pedigree of coming from a QB family. The staff actually hopes that Stephens continues to grow and blossoms into our starter by next August, but to do so he needs to be pushed. Recall that he missed most of the spring and still pushed Crompton for the job this year (according to coaches-it was very close). The best chance for someone to beat out Stephens, barring a collapse by him (which is doubtful given what he's been through before), is for a mature seasoned QB like Simms to come in and show he can run the offense better with fewer mistakes----result is more efficiency. Remember these coaches like competition, and what they are doing is trying to find some for Ginger....

I just really don't expect Nick Stephens to start next year. If Crompton's play during the early stretch of games right after WKU didn't get Stephens in the lineup, then the fact we've so aggressively pursued JuCO options like Matt Simms means he's not going to play then, either.

Earlier you said he HAD been offered and now you say you BELIEVE he has been offered....From reading your posts it is my belief you have no inkling of a clue :eek:lol: Simms has not been offered by this staff.

Do you think he will commit as soon as an offer has been made?

Hopefully not...As I said before this team is on the right track and We don't need a over privledeged brat in that locker room ruining the TEAM concept with his "I am a Simms" attitude...And as soon as he is beaten out for the starting job then the cancer will grow into something horrible and the complaining will start...Newton to me just seems more like one of the guys and would be a better fit but I'm not the one making the choices for this team, Just wishful thinking....But I have a bad bad feeling about Simms...

I am worried about Newton being suspended for the first quarter the week UT comes. I am not saying that I know who UT should go after but that is a second red flag.

Does anyone know for sure that Simms can be here in January?
